Looking for two book titles and authors

I read two series of books quite a few years back and I'd like to find them again. I have just a bit of each one so I'm hoping someone will recognize them and give me a title or author.

The first series had something to do with a ring as I remember (no, not THAT ring...) and had a Chinese girl who was genetically altered so she had to remain pregnant in order to be able to think and function rationally. I remember something about the 'infinite patience of a machine/robot.'

The second one was more fantasy and what I remember most was the warriors who were paired with animals. If the animal died the warrior went off into the blue nowhere and just kind of disappeared. Two of the main characters were paired with a hawk and a wolf.

Hi dmizesr. I'm pretty sure this is the late Jack L. Chalker's series The Rings of the Master -- four books in all:

Rings of the Master

• Lords of the Middle Dark (1986)
• Pirates of the Thunder (1987)
• Warriors of the Storm (1987)
• Masks of the Martyrs (1988

Typical Chalker and great, fun reads. If you enjoyed these and haven't read much else by Chalker, there are a whole load of similarly entertaining books from him. Try and hunt down a copy of Midnight at the Well of Souls -- the first volume in The Well World Saga, which is probably his best known series.

The other one also rings a bell... but a very distant one. I'll have a think...

As for the second one ... the dragons in Anne McAffrey's Pern books were paired with humans and when the dragons died the humans went Between and died as well.

I am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but it was the first thing that came to mind.
