What comic books/graphic novels are you reading at the moment?

I just read the first issue of the Queen of the Black Coast. (latest Conan.) It's my first exposure to any legit Conan, apart from the old timey movie, the video game, and a book by some fool named Carpenter. So far it seems pretty chill.

Also picked up the new 52 Batman #1, Catwoman #1, and Batman+Robin #1. I'm already subscribed to Batman, but based on these other two, I may scrip up with them too. That would put me up to 5 new 52 titles now. Yeesh.

Read Conan Vol 7, got Vol 8 to read. Also numbers 5 and 6 of the MUGNC just arrived, so got Thor reborn and Spiderman the birth of Venom to read.

Have just finished THE AGE of X (X-Men Cross over) from over a year ago. It's well written and drawn but nothing that I have not seen before. Instead of being a triumphant delight, it is perhaps a prime example of why I'm stopping reading so many comics.

I've got the CAPTAIN BRITAIN: SIEGE OF CAMELOT graphic novel on my desk as work for the brief moments of quiet. Such luminaries as STEVE PARKHOUSE, JOHN STOKES, ALAN DAVIS, DAVID THORPE and some chap called ALAN MOORE provide creative duties.

The pile of comics beside the bed are mostly X-titles, that have stock piled and will serve to be the final X-Men comicbooks I read on a monthly basis. (But there are a lot of them!)

Yeah, I'm having to hold back! I get Batwoman and Birds of Prey every month, but every time I go to the shop, I stare wistfully at Cliff Chiang's art on Wonder Woman. If not the comic, I'd love some of those covers in poster form! I also hear that Scott Synder's stuff is brilliant, and would love to read the Court of Owls stuff, especially as it's branching into almost all the BatFam books in issue nine.

Which other two titles are you getting?

When it comes to modern Conan comics, Dark Horse run by Busiek/Cary Nord is highly rated. They were my first experience of Conan. They made me found the literary Conan and become huge fan of his creator who you can see in my avatar.

Queen of the Black Coast is one of the best Conan stories written by Howard so i will read despite the art is too cartooney, pretty boy Conan in the new series.

Crap.

So I've been saying that I've heard very good things about Snyder's Batman in the new 52. Then all this week I've heard people raving about issue seven (out today) and shopkeepers who got it early yesterday praising it massively via tweets. Mainly retweeted by Scott himself, who I follow (I sent him a tweet telling him it was cruel!)

If I hear something, I have to find out about it.

So, of course, when I went to pick up my Birds of Prey, I bought Batman too. Tne comic book guy, who's a legend, is getting five and six for me, which are the only ones in print at the moment. I'll get the rest in digital. He said I have to read five, it's mind blowing. His words.

So that's three comics a month now. I know it's hardly massive amounts (me and No One were in the shop once and a guy spent ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR POUNDS in one go. We were shocked. We still can't get over it now) but if I keep this up, I'll be buying loads every month! Especially as this Court of Owls stuff is leaking into other titles (and is going to spread into a storyline that will be in all the BatFam books in issue nine).

Damn these comics!

Well the comic industry needs it, since I cut back to six comics a month (from FAR too many) someone needs pick up the slack I created. ;)

Haha, I did think, when I saw you saying about cutting back on comics, that I was pretty much stepping in at the right time to fill the hole :D

I use to read 15 monthly comics and 3-5 volume of other series every month. But now that there is many great collection of classics, new good comics from Image,Vertigo and many new interesting 52 comics i have less money to spend.

I have cut down to barely 50 punds or 500 Swedish kronor a month which are 10 comics in a month. I use to spend over 100 punds when i read 15-20 comics.

Not smart to go to Uni without student loan ;)

Back when I was a Marvel comics fan, buying 'em off the stands in 1967 for 12c each, a month's worth must have cost under $2 US. Even when the prices went up, the cost was only a few dollars a month...

It's hardly breaking the bank at the moment and I keep telling myself they're only £2.40 each...which is a dangerous way of thinking, really! Cos then I'll keep thinking "Well, I can afford to get another one...and maybe one more..."

And before I know it I'll be spending ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR POUNDS in one go (yes, that always has to be capitalised!)

I love Cliff Chiang's art work in Wonder Woman and have to fight every time I go into the shop to not start buying her. And Scott Snyder also does Swamp Thing, so it's probably good...

Slippery slope ahead!

Hoppy if you like Snyder you must read his American Vampire and Detective comics run. His Batman run has become weaker after strong first 3-4 issues. Im getting sick of Owls mystery....

For me no comic cost the same every few months because the american dollar goes strong or weak to swedish money every few months.

When i have more time, money for my comics i will cut down on american ones and collect more comics from Europe and Japan.

I want to try badly the classic Corto Maltese books.

Heh, you may be the only one with that opinion, everyone else in the comic book world seems to be all 'OMFG, Court of Owls is amazing!' If anything, people are enjoying it so much because it's really bigging up the story telling aspect of comics. Though I need to read the previous six issues to really get the gist of what's going on, issue seven was an interesting one. Not at all big on action, but really twisting a story, affecting characters' backgrounds that go decades back (in comic book terms). Not destroying it, or overwriting it, but moulding it to Snyder's purposes in this run.

Now that I'm getting favourites (Snyder, J.H Williams III, Cliff Chiang, Duane Swierczynski, Jesus Saiz (man, I will be sad to see his art leave Birds of Prey)) I definitely do want to investigate more of their stuff.

Batman fans love secret societies and old mystery like the owls. Also in Batman forums in CBR alot of fans are starting to complain. I have read alot of Batman comics, all the modern classics, alltime greats. Its not easy to impress me when it comes to great batman storytelling.

Snyder is the only current batman writer i trust to follow so i hope for great storytelling from him. I follow writers, artist more than comic characters. I hope his Batman is as great as American Vampire that made his name.

Do you read American Vampire ?

Heh speaking about Jesus Saiz i just thought about buying Bird of Prey because i like his art from other superhero series i have read.

I'm new to all of this, so I'm easily impressed!

No, haven't tried American Vampire. I'm slowly slowly branching out - these three titles that I get are the first ever ongoing comic series that I've bought. Very new to this comic lark!

I really, really like Saiz's art a lot. He captures expressions and body movements very well. I haven't been disappointed with him throughout Birds (whereas a few of the covers, drawn by someone else, I've really disliked). What with all the changing of creative teams that's currently happening with the New 52, I know he'll be stepping back soon, and the guys from Animal Man, I believe, coming instead. Cover and inside work. I've seen the cover for that issue (number ten) and I really don't like it :(

Have you seen J.H Williams' artwork in Batwoman? Simply stunning.

Jesu Saiz work i remember vividly from Manhunter that is a cult female superhero series in DCU. Animal Man is the most acclaimed new series of 52 so you dont have to worry about those creators. Although Foreman is arty, weird style and not superhero style.

Wow you are such a newbie then. It will be fine if you follow your taste, fav creators. When i was new i read Sin City and Frank Miller being fav led me to Batman classic stories of his and DD classic stories of his. So Batman,DD type superhero is my fav. Most of the time i read genre comics from Indy comics.

I like JH Williams comics i read before but his new Batwoman is good looking but it is not a good fit for Superhero. The panel, the layout make me almost dizzy. Weird i enjoyed his earlier style.

I'm not going to list what I read at my best/worst, but it was nothing for me to go into the local comic book shop and spend somewhere close to £40.00 and wander out again, doing that week in week out. Of course comics were cheaper then so I got more for my pound.

I think I must have been close to 80 titles a month, DC/Marvel/Image.

My currently revised titles are down to The Boys, Fables, The Next Men, Buffy, Angel & Faith, Jennifer Blood and probably one or two others that escape me at the moment.

80 series ? I have hard time remember when i read 15 comics a month, mostly because my fav monthly comics was never regulary realesed. You never knew when Scalped came out on time or not, The Walking Dead,Invincible etc

I have changed my monthly haul to this pull list after new comics and losing interest in other:

Fatale (Mini)
Daredevil
Scalped
Batman
Batwing
Blue Beetle
Frankenstein
Animal Man
The Walking Dead
Near Death
Invincible
Lobster Johnson: The Burning Hand(Mini)
Peter Pantzerhaust (New)
The Winter Soldier (New)

Those minies+ i collect BPRD and American Vampire in Volumes.

The issue 10 Birds of Prey cover, there's a giant green...plant...thing and it is beautifully drawn. But I just feel that the Birds themselves aren't drawn well at all. But I'll reserve judgement. I adore Williams' style and didn't want Amy Reeder taking over from him, however briefly, on Batwoman, but by the second issue she'd drawn, I had settled into her style fine. Although I think she had been trained, as it were, to follow a similar style for the series, considering how iconic Williams' drawing are...

I simply adore the style of Batwoman. The double pages, the drawings that defy the boxes, the swirling edges...Each page is a delight. But every aspect of this series, I love, so I can easily wax lyrical about it. As most Batwoman fans seem to! It's definitely doing a lot right.

Apart from Watchmen, and a dabble into a few over novels, I am very new, yes. I have been sucked into the whole comic atmosphere now, though. I follow so many different comic book resources and though I'm only buying three titles, I am following the story lines of much, much more and slowly building up my knowledge of old titles and plots, too. I am becoming a total comic nerd and I love it.
