Can anyone to advise?

Hi there,

I'm a great fan of late 19. and early 20. century horror literature; my favourite writters are William Hope Hodgson, Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood, and looking for a new names, I would like to ask, if somebody of You knows about some other classic artists the works of which are similar to the stories of the writters afore-mentioned.

Thanks for any suggestion.

Well, I wonder who I'm about to suggest (and I get to do it before J.D )

Ever read anything by H.P Lovecraft? He is of that time period and writes some brilliant stories. I can wholeheartedly recommend him! Try one of his collections of short stories, like the Call of Cthulhu and other Weird Stories or the like. Fantastic!

Sometimes hard to distinguish between horror, gothic, and ghost stories during that particular period. Going by the broadest definition, M. R. James, J. Sheridan LeFanu, Elizabeth Gaskell, Bram Stoker, Clark Ashton Smith, M. E. Braddon, F. Marion Crawford are names that come immediately to mind.

Fitz-James O'Brien is one of my very favorites, but his stories are difficult to find.

Clark Ashton Smith is great if you like Machen and Lovecraft...although most of his stories are set in exotic fantasy lands (with wizards and warriors) rather than his contemporary period.

and you will find Robert E. Howard here, too, he has some good horror stories, Cthulhu stuff, etc.

Also, Lovecraft wrote what is possibly the best single essay on the horror field, covering it up to that point:

If you'll look through this, you'll find plenty of suggestions. There's also an appended bibliographic index, with links to allow you to read a lot of the stories included in the essay, even several which are not currently in print:

Incidentally, I'd second Fitz-James O'Brien. Very good stuff, and he influenced many writers since. Here's a link that will lead you to several of his works:

Fortunately, quite a few of these writers are now coming back into print, whether it be through major houses or through some of the POD companies, and others are available online for you to either read or download/print. A very rich field, with plenty to enjoy.

I'd also recommend the supernatural stories of John Buchan, which have been collected together in a single volume, and H. Russell Wakefield's stories (which, sadly, are a bit difficult to find right now, but are well-worth looking up).

Unfortunately, that O'Brien page links to Blackmask for his major stories, and Blackmask disappeared from the web several months ago.

Red Moon has some of his stories -- and many other good things as well:

It can be difficult to navigate, however, because the stories are alphabetized by title rather than author.
