Hey, I don't know if this is on the site anywhere, but has anyone thought that perhaps quaithe might be sarella, the sand snake who is missing from dorne. doran martell says he could not imprison her because she was off playing a game or some such thing. . . . and she was not in dorne. he does say he hopes she will be more prudent than her sisters about the matter of oberyn's death. I know people think that Ashara Dayne is Quaithe, but i don't think so. i think eddard threw her from a tower and killed her to keep her from revealing that arthur dayne was guarding lyanna and rhaegar's son. any thoughts? and apologies if this is already a theory circulating.

And that son is............................Jon Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
That's what has been tickling MY brain the last few weeks anyway.

My Axe.....................quickly!

That's an awesome, if totally insane, theory, but no. Sarella is (probably) Alleras the Sphinx, the Dornish 'boy' studying to be a maester at the Citadel whom Sam meets at the end of AFFC.

I love it when people come up with new theories. But I am going to have to disagree with you. There is NO WAY Ned would throw Ashara off a tower!!!!!! He wouldn't even take the Lannister kids into custody.

By all means keep any theories you have coming, it's always fun to look at ideas from a different perspective.

Dont be so quick to dismiss this one, Ive had problems with coming up with an acceptable scenario where Ms Dayne would pitch herself from the cliffside.

Lamenting both the loss of Neds love and her brother she commits suicide has always been a little trite to me. Maybe Im projecting but I would think the Daynes would be about service as opposed to something selfish like personal lamentation. Whats the saying from the Wheel of Time? Duty is a mountain, death is but a feather. I would think she would be honor bound to continue doing her duty and not some weird comic-book like scenario of committing suicide or going into seclusion to become a trained killer or whatever.

Maybe she flings herself because of a misguided sense of honor, sacrificing herself to ensure her rightful liege's secret is kept, or maybe she attacks Ned when she realizes he killed her brother and has in his possession the rightful ruler of Westeros.

Oh well just thoughts

That would present a new image of Ned, not only as the proud and honourable Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell but as a murderer of women and a man willing to do just about anything to keep a promise. This would shatter the lovefest that ASOIF fans have had with Ned since AGOT.

I love it!

Agreed. 4 reasons for that.

1. Alleras=Sarella

Mirored name. The strongest reason.

2. Description of Alleras and Oberyn. It is also said that Alleras has tight hands.

3. Every sand snake uses different weapon to kill.

Obara-spear
Nym-knives
Tyenna-poison
Sarella-might be using arrows

4. In Sam's chapter he saw two green Sphinx in Oldtown, one has male and one female face. Later he meets Alleras who wears green cloak. And Oberyn also has 6 circles of Messtar colar.

"The Sphinx is the riddle, not the riddler", to quote an old dying blind man.

A-l-l-e-r-a-s s-a-r-e-l-l-A.

Quaithe is a spy from Braavos, possibly, though I can't remember reading all that much about her that would allow me to judge.

Quaithe is a shadow binder (I don't know where I got this term, perhaps from the books, perhaps from the CCG) from Asshai (or somewhere in the mysterious east), iirc.

Now it seems to me that Oberyn travelled a bit and had more than his fair share of lovers. But I don't know that all of his offspring became Sand Snakes. Perhaps he was not aware of all his children... it is in the realm of possibility that Quaithe could be his child and yet not one of the SS.

Wow, I just typed SS to denote Sand Snakes... now does anyone think that these Sand Snakes could be in any way compared to the SS of our world? They seem well equipped, fanatical, and wedded to the philosophy that the end justifies the means. Kinda sounds like the SS.

Could Qhaithe be a faceless man?

I don't recall ever hearing anything about shadow binders. Could someone please elaborate?

Quaithe is from the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai. Melisandre, who is from Asshai itself, is a shadowbinder. IIRC, Quaithe is assumed to be a shadowbinder but it isn't explicitly stated (may be wrong about this, as it's getting on for 4 years since I last re-read ACoK). Exactly WTH a shadowbinder is or what one does is unclear. People of the Shadow Lands wear lacquered masks, whilst those from Asshai (like Melisandre) just appear to be exotic and mysterious.

Qaithe could be a Faceless Man, although this would be pointless as we haven't seen her face anyway :)

If I remember correctly, shadow binders are persons who can make free shadows. Mellisandre is using king Stannis life power to make shadows that kill people at night (Renly and Courtney Penrouse). Quaithe uses her shadows to talk with Danny, but I don't know is she using life power and whose life power is she using. It is possible that if you want to talk to somebody via shadow you don't need to use another human's life power. But if you want to kill somebody you need hard shadow that can cut through steel as happened to Renly and you neel someone's life power to do that. You can see example of that when Davos speaks about Stannis. Stannis is getting older and older every time Mellisandre makes a shadow.

Just want to ask a question.....

Are we sure Lady M used Stannis' life energy to power the shadow underneath Storms End? If I recall correctly Davos just thinks it looks very familiar (the thing she birthed). I took it to mean it was somehow a shadow of Davos'. I guess it makes more sense to be "Powered by Stannis" (TM) but theres at least a little bit of confusion on my part.

Davos says something like this : " He know that shadow. He also knew the man whose it was"
Mellisandre to Davos in dungeon : " Don't be afraid, good knight. Shadows live only when light gives them a birth. And I'm afraid of using kings fires to make him another son." Then she proposes to him to have sex and use his energy to make another shadow.

Oh, yes. It's now coming back to me. I am humble enough to admit my foolishness as well (regardless if even Aegon knew about shadow binders).

But, forgive my stupidity once again, what does Quaithe want with Dany? Her dragons?

TK, You're starting to post like me... well, except for the humility part.

What Quaithe wants with Dany is anyone's guess. She may be a friend or she may be more. She may be an enemy setting Dany and Westeros up for a calamitous disaster.

What Quaithe wants with the Dragons is also unclear. She may be some retro-bio-engineering-chemist who wants to reintroduce Dragons to their native habitat... perhaps she wants to turn Westeros into the first Wild Dragon Natural Habitat and Preserve.
