Should Glen A. Larson do a remake or continuation movie?

When I was growing up I was a fan of the show. However, when the Sci-Fi Channel aired the show back in 1992, I was surprised at how cheesy it was. Most of the episodes were poorly written, the show strayed away from its dark premise and became a "planet/alien of the week" premise. The show is not worth doing a sequel after the final episode, "The Hand of God".

With that in mind, I've recently learned that Glen Larson is considering doing a remake rather than a continuation movie. One of the main reasons is because he does not want to continue the story without the character of Adama. Another reason is because he always wanted the original series to be darker, but was forced to make it more family oriented because the ABC network put censors on it.

I think it would be cool to have Larson cast Richard Hatch as the new Commander Adama and Dirk Benedict as the new Commander Cain. Both actors are aging quite well and are relatively young. In addition, they are at that age where they are capable of commanding a Battlestar. It's better to forget about the original series and let Larson do a remake in the way he always wanted to do: without the censors imposed heavily by ABC.

What does everybody else thinks?

I'm not sure a remake would be a good move. I loved the cheesyness of the old BSG and I know they are not trying to give the same atmosphere as before. I am not convinced it would work. For the younger generation that haven't seen the old maybe, I always think remakes are a bad move. :)

I liked the 1970's (okay it was 1979 when it started) feel to the old series... It had some good ideas, and some bad ones... How did Baltar (who was supposed to have been be-headed in the pilot) become the leader of the Cylons - sworn enemies of humans everywhere???

But I liked the whole idea of the Colonial Warriors - men from all 12 colonies fighting for the common good!!! Though the whole Planet Earth being the destination of the 13th Tribe never sat right with me - where are all the advanced stuff?? And when did they (or we) get here???

And the whole angel encounter that caused everybody to end up in white uniforms was a bit far-fetched, but a bit of escapeism..

Now Galactica 80 was a complete waste of time!!! Jeez, that stunk little a month dead skunk!!! Flying bikes??? Super intelligent kids???

But this new series, I LIKE!!!! It is less male oriented!!! There is a more even division of male and female roles - as befits modern society... There is a better and more believable slant on why the Cylons exist and what they want to do and why!!!

I don't think Richard Hatch or Dirk Benedict would be good to play these roles... Was Richard Hatch a prisoner in one of the new series, or did I see wrong???

One thing I have noticed, where are all the black actors??? There is just one primary black female character - the bridge officer...

I enjoyed having black actors in lead roles in the original series.... Colonel Tai and Boomer!!!

Oh Master you are right Richard Hatch was in an episode as a prisoner. How bizzare was that? But then again I am always easily confused.
I had never thought about the lack of black actors but now you mention it there is a distinct loss of them. :(

Though Boomer is now Oriental and a woman - and in two places at once... (Wonder if the actress gets paid twice???)

I like the idea of strong female characters - The President (though she'll be dead in less than 7 months), StarBuck - she kicks booty!!! and Boomer - "she's a Cylon, kill her!"

But definitely needs more Black and Asian characters!!!

Only times I've seen Asian characters in Sci-Fi were in Star Trek... TNG had Chief Engineer Singh on the Enterprise, I think he died...

And in Voyage Home, there was an Asian character - but I can't remember what he did as a job... Captain of one of the disabled vessels (by the probe) or an Engineer!!!

There should be more Black, Asian and Oriental actors in Sci-Fi!!! :D

I'm curious - how does all this tie-in with the recent re-makes?
My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but I've been busy. Battlestar Galactica creator Glen A. Larson has recently announced that he as acquired the movie rights and plans on producing a feature film in the near future. Unlike the current television version, the story is a continuation movie that picks up right after the final episode entitled, "The Hand of God". The storyline takes place 20 years later which reunites original series stars Richard Hatch as Apollo and Dirk Benedict as Starbuck. They will be playing their characters as older, wiser and seasoned officers in charge of the Galatica, while the stars of the movie will be a new generation of Galaticans who were born in space with no recollection of the holocaust. I've always thought that including a crossover with the new cast of Galatica would be a good idea because it would unite both fan factions, thus, creating a bigger fanbase. However, Larson does not plan on doing that. Perhaps Moore will do a crossover in a future episode involving Richard Hatch playing both characters Apollo and Zarek in the same scene. Personally, I think it would be cool to see.

No problems - nice to see you around here anyway. :)

I'm a little confused, though - the idea of promoting two separate shows under the same title seems a little odd to say the least.

Thanks for the kind words. :) It's always a pleasure chatting with you too.

The idea of two versions of Galatica co-existing with one other may be somewhat confusing for those that have never heard of the original version, while tuning in for the current television show. I would like Moore to include a storyline in a future episode where there is a crossover, that is, a mirror mirror or an alternate reality or parallel universe concept. You could throw Iblis in there as the source of the convergeance. His purpose could be to have the crews of each reality see the negative aspects of the others reality and cause them to lose hope. Iblis in the new series could appear as a benefactor saying that he offers them hope in another universe, see the folly of refusing that help. Then when TOS crew realize who is behind this they warn TNS crew of Iblis and join forces to return to their own realities. A good twist would be that one of the colonial warriors, a new character perhaps gets left with TNS crew. Personally, I would like to see Richard Hatch playing both Apollo and Zarek in the same scene together. It would be cool.
