about the comma in these phrases. do i place a comma or not. and could you please explain to me why there goes a comma or not. thanks

1.Market steps out, holding a watch.

2.Baker enters, carrying a large grocery bag.

3.Max enter, holding a briefcase.

4.They walk out on deck, carrying small cages.

I agree - no commas in any of these. A general comma rule: If in doubt, leave it out. I love commas and will put them in whenever I need the sentence to have a break(but these don't need the pause, nor are they lists or complete thoughts on their own)

You could also try asking this sort of question here, Huxley - and read some of the other posts in that section - some of them may be useful to you as well:)

Personally, I would expect a comma in 3, but not the others. I was taught that a comma goes where you would pause for a breath,(like here) or at a natural "beat" in the sentence.
