I'd be greatful for any help, but I'm afraid the details are a little sketchy , as I read it around 1985-86 in the UK . We got it as a new book at our school library , so may have been newly published at that time

A large (few hundred pages) hard-backed sci-fi graphic novel

I (think) it involved the end of a civilisation , and a spaceship (possibly crash?) landing on another planet. The story then detailed the rise of this new civilisation which was a cross between a technological and primitive society

It is possible, having viewed other threads on this forum that it may be The Tigan Empire , although without more info I couldnt say for certain - and the name doesnt sound familiar

sorry I can't be more precise, but any suggestions would be appreciated

The Trigan Empire was drawn by Don Lawrence and heavily based on the Roman Empire. It appeared in Look & Learn during the 1970s and 1980s. See Don Lawrence
