Anybody read this comic book? It is about how his father survived the Holocaust. Anybody who hasn't read it, just be warned, it isn't for the light hearted, there are some extremely graphic pictures in it.

yea, read both books. simply wonderful.

anybody who thinks comic books are only for kids needs to read stuff like this. it won the pulitzer IIRC.

Yes, I read Maus some years back. Very powerful indeed. And I agree... comics can be as good as any other form of written work, in the right hands.... It's a pity that we don't have more such (quality, that is, not necessarily just on the same subject).

there's definitely some stuff out there of similar quality.

"bone" by jeff smith <--- this one in particular is perfect for this forums
"watchmen" by alan moore
"small favors" by colleen coover
"the big book series" by gahan wilson and company
"cartoon history of the universe" by larry gonick
"love & rockets" by the hernandez brothers <--- my personal fave
various frank miller stuff

there's more, but that's a good start right there. i could show some sample pages if that's cool.

I think the sample pages might run into copyright problems, actually.

And to be clear: I wasn't saying there aren't good things out there... just that there are comparatively so few, given the enormous amount of material that's produced in that field. I've two comics shops very near here, that are rather large, and both crammed with stuff. Most of it is entertaining, and some of it is quite nice... but I've yet to see very much that has that kind of impact... not a problem with most other aspects of written material when there's that large a selection. That is what I'm a bit sad about. There's so much potential there for extremely powerful stuff, including the talent necessary... but still the percentage that attains such remains lower than it perhaps should....

i'm not debating that there are few out there... just trying to give some examples for people to follow up on if they liked the quality of maus.

I like the analogy of the cat vs mouse thing in his illustration of Maus, I find that it does a good job portraying the feeling of always being chased and prosecuted.

I liked how he recorded everything they did while Art was interviewing his father too, it also gives insight to how the Holocaust affected his father for several years afterwards.
