Do u think any of gemmell books will make it to the big screen

I'd always thought Gemmel's books would make good movies. He's got vivid, larger than life characters and he's done a very good job with descriptions.

His plots and people, like Lord of the Rings also seem to fit with the troubled times of today.

It would be wonderful, personally, to see movies like this again but as has already been said here they would have to be done well and stay true to the spirit of the books.

Actors would have to be found that match up to being a Legend for instance.

It's not impossible. Lord Of The Rings is a good example of what can be done. I'd like to see his books on the silver screen, starting with Legend.

I personally would love to see Waylander: The Movie, but i agree that it would be a difficult task to do DG's work justice on the big screen.

They already did that one. It's called "The Outlaw Josey Wales." :)

Seriously, that's exactly who I thought of when I started reading the Waylander books. I could even picture Clint (the young Clint - from the 80s!) playing the part. Good stuff.
(Hereoes in the Shadows is my favorite - gotta love Yu-Yu!)

I also think Kebra the bowman could be played wonderfully by Scott Glenn.

White Wolf: with Jean Claude Van Dam as Skilgannon and Dolph Lundgren as Druss........ *cough*

Dolph isnt rugged/gruff enough to play Druss and somehow just cant imagine him with a black beard looking imposing and saying the word - "Laddie"

Still stick by James Cosmo or Gerry Butler for Druss.

Rather than JVD for Skilgannon, I reckon Mark Dacascos would do a better job. See "Brotherhood of the Wolf" for an example, not the best performance but an example none the less.

For Skillganon how about the guy who played Darth Maul in star wars? Seem to remember he was pretty good with a lightsabre.

Come on people! Sense of humour!

i dont think there is anyone that could play druss out there. maybe they would have to use an unknown.

I'm not sure who could play Druss, possibly that dude with the beard in 300..if they used cgi to make him a bit bigger!

I've always associated Shannow with Clint Eastwoods "Preacher" character from Pale Rider.

It's a pity Clint is too old for the part, he would have been perfect for the role.

This was my first post here! Hi All!

Gemmell did say Shannow was inspired by Pale Rider.

Perfect Shannow has been the bearded 40+ years Clint. He was too good Shannow then.

Shame hollywood wasnt hungry enough to make movies on books then as they are now.

At the current state though i hope they leave Gemmell books alone.

Hi all,
Personally i can not think of any actor to do justice to any of DG's characters. And if they generally do, they will spoil the images that those who have read the according books have created.
What i would really like to see is an anime of DG's Rigante first two books, sword in the storm and midnight falcon. It would have to be a series, for 2 or 3 hours of movie time will not be enough to do justice to the characters. Also, if that ever happens, it would be a good idea to have a poll on how the main characters would look like on the web. eg, the sketch artist wuold provide 4 or 5 different versions of connavar and the others and the fans would be able to choose.

i agree, there is no actor or anyone that could fill the big boots of druss, or bare the scars of connavar.
if anything it has to be like beowulf or simular, but even then it will be wrong.

personaly, im on the verge of making a machinima of legend (when you use game engines to make a movie) now it i personaly dont think it will be what i imagine, or be nearly as good as the book. but its jus summit small i can do to make a tribute to the almighty DG.

I think if any of them got made into a movie it would be Dark Moon or Echoes of a Great Song, stand alone books, character's that can be more easily portrayed, perhaps. And both awesome.

If they were to make a film of DG book, I think it should definately be from the Rigante series, but I don't reckon it will get done, unless there's some big director somewhere out there who really loves David Gemmell books :p I can't see it being done properly unless it was done by someone who actually cared about the book....

I think if done right then the Jon Shannow books might adapt best and easiest. He's a complex, haunted and deadly character in a world that looks like the old West, but the reveal in a movie could be very dramatic.

I'd like to see it, different enough from most fantasy novels.

Gemmell film should never happen...

I know that sentence will upset people but its true, Gemmell didn't write to have his hereos made into jokes by directors who only do what studios tell them to do. He wrote them so that the people who read his books can sit up late at night turning page after tear soaked page just waiting to find out what happens next. If/How/When there hero makes it. Not so that a bunch of twits that have never read or intend to read the books can watch the film and think they know what Gemmell is all about! God I would love to see a GOOD Gemmell film a good director the right actors and the right settings would be an awesome experiance! But his stories have to be enjoyed through the ancient art of reading. We fall in love with his characters! He got offered but knocked em back and I think Stella will hold to it. I love watching films, but it doesn't compare to settling down with the good book. And how many people have seen LOTR and thought those films never did the books any justice atol??? and even the same for the Harry Potter books/films.

I spose the only bonus to a Gemmell film would mean more people reading his book. So they can say they preffered it to there friends to sound interesting and witty, for having actually read a book and all (and in all honesty I'd rather pretencious gits like that didn't read them because then good sites like this would be flooded with bandwagon jumpers)

The big problem with the film industry is they slaughter good books to make decent films.

I mean I'm hoping that If they ever do make a DG Film (Series) they do it right and not butcher it

most of the ignorant public would just take it as a western and wouldn't take to the time line jumping all that well... If they did like with Frank Miller they did a few of his films Shannow would be a later one. So when it came out people would bemore receptive to it. Personally I'd like to see White wolf (warewolfs go down well) as it has 2 kickass heroes. And then maybe one from a different series like Morning Star. The complexity of Mace would prepare people for Shannow.

If it was done well, which is a very rare thing, I'd like to see Legend, but as someone said earlier, most often people don't read the source material, don't really care about it, and don't understand it. The only recent one I can think of where the director and creator sat with the book on set, constantly flicking through it for input, for inspiration was Peter Jackson on LOTR. That level of dedication would be needed for it to be a good film for me, but as that is unlikely to happen, I'd prefer no film at all. I have the books and I'm happy.
