BBC NEWS | Entertainment | 'New' Tolkien novel goes on sale

'A new book by The Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien has gone on sale, 34 years after the writer's death.

The Children of Hurin has been completed by his son Christopher from a series of unfinished manuscripts.
Christopher said the story, set long before the events of the Rings trilogy, represents the last major work by his father about Middle-earth.
The book has been illustrated by Alan Lee, who worked on the movie series and helped launch the book in London.
Tolkien's grandson Adam, who worked as assistant editor on the book, was also at the launch. He said he was "sad" at how some fans have forgotten about who his grandfather actually was.'
Well, I can assure him not here, not at the Chronicles!:)

There are a couple of articles here of interest; one a review, the other a bit on the history of the book itself, which answers the question of whether this is "genuine" JRRT, or bits and pieces with lots of connective tissue supplied by Christopher:

Despite the headlines, it sounds like there's very little by Christopher in here, and it was more the finding of all the material and putting together the jigsaw in such a way that it was consistent that made this take so long....

I also see on bookstands the 50th aniversary edition of Lord of the Rings. As I was leafing through it and considering a purchase, I was very intrigued at the amount of information in the appendicies, the only reason I did not get it was the fact that I already have two different versions/printings of that story. Though its hard to pass this one up...

Yes I was reading the book review on this " The Children of Hurin"
Comparing it to The Hobbit in its simplicity to read. Surron is a lieutenant to Vala Morgoth.
The review states that although edited by Christopher Tolkien "it is unmistakably the work of Tolkien"
It could be worth reading, apparently the next release is "The History of the Hobbits."

So, has anybody started this book? I was thinking of getting it, but wasn't sure if it would be like the silmarillion.

I've recently finished it (yesterday) and I enjoyed it immensely. Yes, it is like the Silmarillion in style and tone, but it is no more difficult to read than LotR. If anything, the real difference that may take some time to get used to is the lack of thought, and access to thoughts. But that should not prove a problem, really.

Bought at it a remainder book sale. I have no idea why it was remaindered when it's brand new and when I bought it, the book had not officially hit the shelves yes.

Yes it is indeed like the Silmarillion only I cried a whole lot more and Alan Lee's artwork is amazing.
