I've recently discovered this site dedicated to bringing back Firefly for a second season. Here is the link:

Joss Whedon's Firefly Season 2

Based on the evidence, it's quite clear that there will probably never be a sequel to Serenity, at least not in the feature film category because it performed modestly at the box office and it should have done much better, afterall, it was a great film. Unfortunately, the word-of-mouth didn't attract enough audience and maybe it was because it was too sophisticated for them as well. Serenity was a non-Hollywood film produced by a Hollywood studio that took a chance. Look at this way, if there was some slim hope of a sequel, I would imagine that TPTB would have to arm-twist Whedon into "dumbing it down" to the level of the general audience public. Rick Berman had to do this for the Star Trek movies and if that is the case, then I prefer if there was no sequel to Serenity at all to protect the integrity of the saga and Whedon himself.

However, it may be possible to consider a second season or a series of movies and releasing it by other media possibilities such as: monthly DVD deliveries, TV On-Demand using your cable or satellite provider, computer viewing via Streaming Download or a series of direct-to-DVDs. The latter is perhaps the best and only way to go considering how well Firefly and Serenity did on DVD sales. Plus, the prospects for direct-to-DVDs appears to be more encouraging with the upcoming releases of Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, and Stargate: Continuum, so there's no reason why we can't have a second season of Firefly or a sequel to Serenity through this option. I've just signed up on the site to push for a second season of Firefly and urge you fellow Browncoats to do the same because it just may turn the tables. We did it before and we got Serenity, therefore, we can do it again! Thanks for reading this and keep flying!

Whitestar.
I really enjoyed Serenity, but you are right word of mouth wasnt enough to get it that audience.
Its funny I saw Serenity without having ever seen firefly, in fact I still havnt seen it. However I am bidding for it on that other well known site, so I hope to have a copy of season one soon.
I have tried to convince others to watch Serenity, maybe I should start with Firefly instead.
You are right in your analogy of having to "dumb it down" I to would not want to see that.
I think based on Serenity alone I would vote for a second series. But I will get back to you as soon as I have seen season one.

I filled out the Season 2 project's "recruit" poll a while back, saying that I'd pay top dollar to watch each new episode.

Crossing my fingers ...

I believe this a concept from Jan 2006 that never took off, I don't know if it is still being considered. While I was looking for more info though, I stumbled across this interesting website with written episodes for a season 2 - fan based I think, but well done nontheless. If you're interested:

Ok Whitestar, got my copy of Firefly and have seen the first two episodes so far. Love it, yes would love to see a second season, I shall cast my vote.....

Yeah, this is not something that's gonna happen. (It's not something that *could* happen at this point yet, either. Maybe down the road there will be a viable economic model for this kind of video on demand project, but not yet. It's taken us decades to get direct-to-home video movies... This kind of thing--a whole season produced direct-to-dvd--will take a comparable amount of time.)

It's much more likely we'll see Firefly/Serenity move forward in comic book form, though -- so if people want to focus their energies advocating for something, it should be, IMO, for that.

Look at the brilliant Buffy Season 8 comics to see the kind of quality possible in that format.

As much as I would love for there to be a second season, I highly doubt it's going to happen, which is a real bummer. It's such a great series. But with everyone of the cast moving on to other things (Nathan Fillion and others are doing movies, Summer Glau is now in the Terminator TV series), I just don't see it happening.

I too actually saw the movie first. I hadn't even heard of it before, and then my dad and mom when to see it when they got free tickets to a premiere. They came home raving about it and then took me. I feel in love right away.

A few weeks later, my uncle sent me the TV series on DVD for my birthday. I think we watched the whole thing over the weekend. It was awesome!
