So I'm in the middle of sorting the ones I want to keep and get rid of. The trouble is I don't know most of the books and not sure which are good reads and which aren't.

So, do you mind if I write down a list of the books?

Please Gothic I'm intersted to see what you have and there's plenty of members who can help you out in selecting which of them to keep...:)

you asked for it, its a very long list and aren't in order just in the order I pick them up out of the carrier bags. My mum's been collecting SFF books for at least 20 years if not longer.

A Plague of Angels by Sheri S Tepper
Dragoncharm by Graham Edwards
Keepers of Edanvant by Carole Nelson Douglas
Star Ascentdant by Louise Cooper
Neverness by David Zindell
The stone and the flute by Hans Bemmann
The serpent mage by Greg Bear
The infinity Concerto by Greg Bear
Ship of Dreams by Brian Lumley
Shapechanger's Song by Jennifer Roberson
This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman
Elven Star by Weis & Hickman
The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks
The sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
The Harlequin's Dance by Tom Arden
The hollow lands by Moorcock
Dragon Wing by Weis & Hickman
The Champion of Garathorm by Moorcock
Master of the five magics by Lyndon Hardy
Fire Sea by Weis & Hickman
The Crystal Palace by Phyllis Eistenstein
The Frozen City by David Arscott and Davis J Marl

(there's more)

Some interesting books there. I'd hang onto anything by Moorcock and Tepper. Also the book by Benmann I've read and quite liked although it's a little slow moving. The books by Weiss and Hickmann form part of their best series IMO Death Gate Cycle (7 part series) so I'ld keep those. That Graham Edwards book is part of a series, so if you like draons you'll probably enjoy that series. I've never read anything by Greg Bear so I can't help there or with some of those other authors. Brooks whom I've read is a bit of a take off of Tolkien so it depends upon whether you favour clones. Keep anything by Friedman, recommended.

Hope this helps a little.

Well, I've read The Harlequin's Dance by Tom Arden, and it wasn't too bad. Rather a different take on fantasy, but not a bad read.

That's an impressive book collection!

Tepper I find somewhat uneven, but usually interesting and enjoyable; Louise Cooper ... depends on what you're looking for; Greg Bear is a bit weak in some areas, and his construction is a bit uneven, but he's usually got some very good ideas and things to ponder (I think I'd suggest The Infinity Concerto out of these, myself); I'm not a big fan of Weis & Hickman... a bit too stereotyped, I think, though many people enjoy them quite a bit; Phyllis Eisenstein... I've not read this particular book, but what of hers I have read I was impressed with; the two Moorcock books are the second books of, respectively, The Dancers at the End of Time and the Chronicles of Castle Brass (the three-volume finale to both the Dorian Hawkmoon set and the Tale of the Eternal Champion); Brian Lumley tends to polarize people -- and I'm not a big fan of Lumley, but I've enjoyed some of his work. The set this is a part of, though, I think is among his weaker work. Not overly fond of Terry Brooks, either -- again, too stereotypical in his approach.

However, if you're looking for just simple, fun reads, the majority of the books there are entertaining, if very light.....

this is the last list of books:
Aurian by Maggie Furey
The last enchantment by Mary Stewart
The Spellkey by Ann Downer
the long dark tea-time of the soul by Douglas Adams
Glitterspike Hall by Mike Jefferies
Sorcerer's Son by Phyllis Einsentein
The restaurant at the end of the galaxy by Douglas Adams
City of Sorcery by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Master of Paxwax by Phillip Mann
Dinbig of khimmur by Philip G Williamson
The Legend of Shadd's Torment by Philip G Williamson
Ealdwood by C J Cherryh
The Still bu David Feintuch

(On another note she has finally given back my Terry Pratchett back. She's only had the book for 6 years)

The thing is I don't have room for my books, I don't have room to store all these as well as read through all of them.

Plus everytime I see her she adds more to my pile

You have got to keep the Douglas Adams, although The restaurant at the end of the universe is the second part of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series.'City of Sorcery' I have not read that particular MZB book but her books are usually good

Master of the Five Magics is a fun read. I remember enjoying it when I last read it (about 20 years ago!) There was a sequel, which I also have somewhere called Secret of the Sixth Magic, but I remember thinking that the first one was better.

You lucky so-and-so. My parents keep "Offering," me things I neither need nor want and get huffy when I have the gall to say, "No thanks."

Ditto that. I remember reading it years ago and enjoying it. Your post jogged my memory about it.

Apparently it is part of a trilogy (yeah what isn't) called the The Arcadia Sequence:

Master of the Five Magics
Secret of the Sixth Magic
Riddle of the Seven Realms

Which I'm probably going to have to check out now.

Why do you need to get rid of some of them? Sortage of space on the bookshelves? (that's regularly my problem) Or merely that you don't think you will ever have time to read all of them?

The problem I can see with the selection is the number of books that are part of series. Take the MZB for example; it's a late volume in the Darkover – well, not quite a series, but it's definitely a collection. When I read that one I had already gone through, I don't know, maybe ten or fifteen books set on the same planet; I already knew several of the characters (unless, of course, I'm thinking of the wrong book; it can happen). Would it be as interesting if you didn't know the history? I don't know.
And there are several others that are similar; Oh the Adams' shouldn't give any problems. That sort of insanity is not really sequential, so it matters little that you come in half way through. But "The last enchantment" without having met Merlin in "The crystal cave" and "the hollow hills"? Much as I love the series, I don't see it.

All of them are paperback. I've already run out of room on the bookshelves for my books and had to stack them on top. If added my mother's they would be stacked up deep. I don't think I'll have time to read them all plus I wouldn't know which books to start with. I havent been doing much reading reacently to be honest.

I would love to keep them all but sometimes I have to be practical, she's given me the first and second books of Tad Williams Otherland series which I already have. She wasnt very keen on that series.
