This is the preface to my novel. It takes place on a world called Bard and on Earth as well. Xerxes the impostor steals the throne of Persia from its rightful king. In the course of the tale we meet the fallen hero Bernard Bear Stomper, his compeditor-Gaylord of the Golden Chin and their mysterious benefactor-Taffilo The Tenor one of the strange creatures that give their world its name. The novel is part serious/part comedy.

The tale was written without knowledge of the recent movie 300 which unfortunately came out just as I was begining to seek a market for BARD. Part of this novel covers similar material to that graphic novel and movie. For those reasons I temporarily pulled it from the market. However, since there is a year's work in this, I decided to test the waters here.
So....Does it look interesting?

THE BARD BUSINESS~By Frank Menser

Xerxes, son and heir of Darius, High king of the Persian Empire and master of the known world, sat within his chambers awaiting the arrival of a God. At least he thought the thing was a God, but whether it was one—or just a ghost, he had been unable to determine. Xerxes did know the apparition he had seen looked nothing like any God he had ever heard of save for himself and that resemblance to his own person was extraordinary.
The being was oddly transparent to his eye in the flickering torchlight, which was disconcerting. Apparently it was constructed of no solid substance. This Xerxes learned when surprised at its sudden appearance, he threw a dagger at it. Fortunately, the ‘God’ indicated to Xerxes that he would forgive the King’s sacrilegious act.
This strange God-being had spoken to him of wonders from other worlds. He claimed there were powerful magics that he could enlist to aid Xerxes conquests and to rid him of the troubling Greeks that were a constant thorn in his sandals. This very night, this apparition had sworn to return to the king with the means of obtaining that power.
When at last he arrived, there was nothing to announce the being in the way of fanfare. One second he wasn’t there, and the next he stood before Xerxes, resplendent in his strange transparency.
“Hail King of Persia,” the apparition said.
“I humbly welcome you to my presence great...what did you say your name is?”
Xerxes leaned forward for a better view. The God ignored his question and continued.
“I have brought unto you that power of which I have spoken. Behold King, a great ring that will open worlds for you, so you may learn and gain knowledge that will bring rich rewards.”
The being placed upon the King’s bed a plain silver ring. Xerxes looked at the ring dubiously. It was unimpressive, lacking any jewels or ornamentation to advertise its potential.
“Wear this on your finger, King and you shall be master of its power. But be warned Great Xerxes, that once donned, to remove it means death to the wearer.”
Hesitantly, the King picked up the ring. It felt heavy. The moonlight gleam of its pure silver enticed him, its power compelled him. Odd, he thought sensing its power; such a ring so heavily endowed, would seem too much for this vaporous being to lift. With a sudden move, he placed the ring on his middle finger. The apparition smiled unpleasantly.
“Now you are now my slave, oh foolish King,” the being said, “That ring you wear will serve only me! I deem it so, that you must now be transported to another place, another world where you will be but slave...and I will rule here in your stead.”
The king looked at his hands that were fading from his view and then at the God-thing whose colors solidified before his eyes.
“I fear my good fellow, you have been tricked.” The apparition laughed.
“Tricked, by whom? Who are you who dare this?”
“Why I should think it would be obvious by now. I am you. Or, to be precise, I am XERXES!”

Mmm looks okay. Of course 300 brings the Greek side of the story, so I suppose it's not 100% the same, so do not worry too much. The idea makes me think of the novel Orizon, by Mario Routi. He uses some alike content.

I think I'd be interested to read the rest.:)

Thanks, the actual battle of Thermoplyae in my novel is viewed from several different perspectives. Leonidas has a small role. The connections between BARD and 300 consist of Historical details of the battle and a few known quotes.

The majority of BARD takes place on the Hero's Planet (BARD) and is about the war there against a mad king who wants to be master of the known Universe. It is also about Jealousy and revenge.

The main theme though has to do with the Hero promotion business...Bards were History's first PR men, as they sang in city and town of the exploits of the heroes they wrote about.

Another peek....

A look at how the Bard business works....

The Bard grinned speculatively. “You know that to succeed as a hero, you really need the right public relations man to promote your exploits.
“Now I ask you,” Taffilo said, “confidentially, what good is it to be a Daemon slayer, if you are only playing to a few terrified eye witnesses?”
“So what has this to do with you?” Bernard rubbed his brow. His head was already ringing from the effects of too much ale and thinking was not making it any better.
“I told you sir, I am a Bard!”
“What you mean, Sir, is that you’re just an undersized singer of songs,” Bernard grunted.
He bent over and squinted his eyes to get a better look at his new companion. As the man spoke something fuzzy on his hat waved back and forth.
“How can a noisy little runt like you, help the likes of me? Uh…and what’s that thing sticking out of your hat?”
Bernard flicked at Taffilo’s plume almost knocking his hat off in the process.
“It’s called a feather,” Taffilo said.
“Now then, for a fee, which of course will be collected later from your earnings, I will travel the land singing bold songs of your greatness, of your exploits, well of your manly charms, if it suits you!”
“A feather?” Bernard flicked at it again with his finger.
“It is from another world Sire,” Taffilo said, irritated by the distraction. “One called Earth by those who live there. Heed it not! Now can I continue?”
“Earth…what kind of a name is that to call a place? Speaks of mud huts and…” Bernard’s brow wrinkled with the effort of attempting thought. Then, since nothing came forth, he smacked his lips and chugged down more ale.
The tiny tenor slapped his forehead in exasperation.
“Bernard pay attention! I can make you a star! Maybe even a bigger one than, well—this Manx fellow you talk about.”
“Sss—not possible,” Bernard said as he straightened up and slammed his fist again into the bar. The hero winced in pain, as he felt his sore knuckles crack.
“Manx is tops in the field! He’s huge! Besides, Gad man, he’s beautiful!”
“I happen to know that he is represented by my cousin, Bert the Baritone,” Taffilo said smugly. “Your idol, Manx, is five foot ten with a pronounced harelip.”
The Bard scowled, his thin mustaches drooping from their usual curls.
“I see, so Bert’s advertising has managed to make an impact even here in this hamlet. But tis but a small matter, scarce worth a thought! We can build your saga, Bernard, from the ground floor in no time at all.”
Taffilo’s hand reached into his vest and extracted a contract. This he deftly tossed into the air and after doing a perfect double flip, it landed precisely, face up next to the business card that Bernard had placed back on the table.
“You have but to sign this document and I shall immediately endeavor to improve your image. Your name will achieve fame so fast, that your opposition won’t know what hit them!”

There is a sense of the Bard to BARD (I enjoy Will's comedies). But there is also a serious side to this novel. Bad things happen to good people and hard lessons are to be learned when the 'innocents' of Bard are faced with the realities of Earth. But enough said, lest too much be given away.

I agree with Laura. These excerpts are very good (esp. number 2). You have some talent there! Loved your humor. Well done!

P.S. Haven't seen "300", so I'm coming to this plotline as a relative newbie. And I like it.

Thank You both!

300 I liked as entertainment, but it did have some inaccuraces. I do go into the battle in some detail. My Leonidas is definitely different from the one in the movie-perhaps more human.

The bulk of the story is on the planet Bard, which is much like Earth-but with some interesting differences.

Besides the novel I have written two shorts about the Bard world.

I am planning to E-publish it soon and will supply details on my Blog at Blogger.com.

Reads very well and the premise is very interesting to somebody like me, who loves all things ancient world.
