Before I start, I would like you all to know that I have followed newbie etiquette and used the "search forum" facility extensively just incase there was someone out there who had the same empty feeling as I do. So half an hour of Monday afternoon work later I thought I best just shoot from the hip.

The books I'm searching for were a sci-fi series aimed at children/young adults I think. I read them in 1987 when I was 9. However, I didn't finish the last book in the series before I had to return it to the school library and leave the country.

The story was set in the future on earth. There was an invasion by an alien race who were protected from energy beam weapons by personal force fields. A small group of soldiers discover that historic conventional weapons such as crossbows and guns can penetrate the alien’s protection. They form a resistance group with other survivors against the aliens and fight to save the earth blah blah.....I seem to remember them getting a spacecraft that resembled a swan or something like that.

Is there anyone who can help me with this search as I don't seem to be able to turn up anything by myself? 20 years of not knowing what the outcome was (although I can guess) has finally taken its toll.

Well, it sounds awfully familiar though I generally don't read a lot of scifi. Hmm. I'll ponder a bit. Hopefully someone else's brain will be working better.

Good luck and welcome to Chronicles!

I'm sure I've read books with that theme of low tech beating high tech a few times. Can't remember any names though :(
Hope one of our more widely read members can help!

The Forever War springs to mind regarding low-tech weaponry being used against forcefields that stop more sophisticated weapons - but that wasn't on Earth and nothing else from The Forever War fits either, so it's probably not what you're looking for.

It is quite a common theme really, though I can't think of any that used guns. Probably not right but I think they did a similar thing in Dan Dare once.

Hi there and welcome mate.

Do you remmber what the aliens looked like? I'm fairly sure a chap called Douglas (Hill?) somebody wrote a series like that. The aliens looked like ants and had eyes that changed colour to express emotion. There were also a race of beast men called the bloodkin.

Thanks to all who have tried to help.

Ice fyre: Sorry I don't really remember, blobby if I had to be pushed.

Somni: Not Dan Dare, I would definately remember that.

Snowdog: Definately not the Forever War, but nice try

dwndrgn: Yeah, I thought it would be a recurring theme

Looks like I shall never find out:eek:

There is a search book site that if you put a synopsis like you have done it tries find the one you are after, the down side is I can't remember where I have seen that.:(

Hello ghotio.
It is quite a common element. Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard features advanced aliens who are assaulted by a group with primitive weapons. I don't remember any swan spaceships or personal forcefields though.
Personal forcefields feature in Dune but that's not Earth.

Oh, and Ice Fyre, that was the "Huntsman" trilogy by Douglas Hill (excellent series)

Ah, was thinking about this thread on holiday.

Now you said blobby, can you remmber if they had different caste's.

I think there was a set of books with a race who had taken over earth, they used force sheilds and were beaten by needle guns, which fired darts rather than bullets.

The main hero was called Hood, and they had a world ship hidden within the great red spot on Jupiter. The aliens turned out to be repressed as well as they gave their young drugs which made them into workers or warriors.

I vaugley remmebr they were described as slug type.

:D Hope this helps dont give up it's only a matter of time before someone remmbers something. I looked and looked and looked for a particular book, all I could remmber was that there was a Dragon/Dinosaur in the attic.

I gave up and lo and behold, some years later, it got republished and I snaffled a copy. Mohahahahahahaha! Never give up never surrender!:D

Apologies for resurrecting such an old thread but after much searching of the internet i too cannot for the life of me discover the title or even author of the series, im hoping that maybe someone new to sff might have some insight?

sadly not the one, ive been googling for weeks but of course needle guns and personal force sheilds are fairly common, i was hoping that with a main character called hood and a worldship hidden in jupiters red spot it may get a hit but alas nothing so far

ice fyre is spot on and yes they had different castes, green, grey and if i remember correctly blue

This is a very, very long shot, but I have a novel called Come, Hunt an Earthman by Richard E. High that ticks almost all of the boxes apart from it being for children. Earth wasn't literally invaded, but it was part of a stellar empire that regarded it as a game reserve, and parties of aliens would frequently show up to go on the rampage, looking for trophies.

Also trying to find this series. About all i can add is that they also found old abandoned weapon caches with ballistic weapons. Guns rifles and the such because mans advanced energy weapons were repelled by the enemies force shields... unfortunately i can't recall the title or author either.

I still think Come, Hunt an Earthman is pretty similar. It's set on Earth, and the humans use crossbows and so on to get past the shielding devices. There are lots of different sorts and colours of alien and the humans do eventually get off-world to attack the alien base with the help of other oppressed aliens and people. I was wrong about the author's name: it's Philip E High, not Richard. It dates from the 1970s.
