About 2000 words on what I thought was going to be a short story. Still might be. I was watching As Good As It Gets (again), this time from the beginning for the first time, and I got one of those "but, what if ..." moments. That's usually as far as such things go, a mental exercise I can play for a few days while trying to sleep, soon to be forgotten as the plot becomes more stupid.
This time, though, I had a free week at work and was approaching Monday morning with resignation when I thought I should keep myself occupied some way - Why not actually
write this one?
So it began.
It's sort of a detective story, no sci-fi, no fantasy as such so far, but a fair amount of delving into the minds of the protags. Trying to keep lessons I've learned here to the fore - don't confuse POVs, make sure you need the adjectives and adverbs (I can't bring myself to cull them completely), seek out and destroy the Passive Voice (where necessary).
Net result is a story that doesn't look like it came from a "what if" moment while watching As Good As It Gets ...
Hope to post something here soon. Might be up to 5000 or 8000 by the time I've finished. Hope you'll be interested when I'm done (as I say, it's not exactly skiffy or fantasy)...
