old children's fantasy book

hi... this is just a shot in the dark.. but i know i've read ths unless i just completely pulled it out of nowhere from my childhood... which would suuuuuuuck...

but anyways... it was a book where a girl is at a local street fair or something, not modern but older... when markets were still wooden booths on the side of dirt roads in small towns... and she is poor i think and there's some event where she dunks her head into a bucket of water and suddenly ends up in a different world... and it goes through the whole thing where the world is in trouble and she helps save the kingdom... but at the very end she falls or something and ends up lifting her head out of that bucket of water as if it were a dream....

i have NO IDEA where this book came from... if it rings any bells please let me know even if you don't remember any specifics.. just to give me some peace of mind...
 
It sounds exactly like "The First Two Lives of Lukas Kasha" by Lloyd Alexander, except that the main character there is a boy.
