What if Hell was a real place and it actually was inside the Earth? What if stories of the Devil and his minions were based on a second humanoid species as old as man himself living said bowels of the Earth?

I enjoyed The Descent immensely when I read it a couple of years ago. I like how myth turns into an unspeakable reality as the Devil and his people find they need to start coming above ground. Of course, these underground beings were already horribly real to those unfortunate enough to have previously made their acquaintance. Especially Ike, a captured mountain climber, who had been their totured slave for years. After he's rescued, he becomes a ruthless underground hunter. Or is he completely ruthless?

This book is not related to the frightening film of the same name, other than the subterranean themes.

I recommend this novel. I also enjoyed Year Zero, an ancient plague in modern times end of the world novel. The Wall and The Reckoning were also passable reads. All by the same author. The Descent was the best of the group in my opinion.

Anyone else have an opinion on Long's work?

I agree - The Descent is a brilliant book packed with interesting and horrifying ideas. The subterranean expedition is superb. I think it's his best book. I did enjoy Year Zero and The Reckoning, but I wasn't overly impressed with them. The main character in Year Zero, Nathan, is forgotten about quite suddenly near the end and the reader never actually finds out what happened to him. Haven't read The Wall yet.

Hmm, not an author I'm familiar with, but I'm going to have to get hold of a copy of 'The Descent' now. You've got me intrigued...

The early chapters of this book were simply some of the scariest I've ever read; especially the opening and the chapter with the soldier investigating the mass grave in Bosnia. That said, once it became apocalyptic (to me) the story was lost. Too bad since I really liked where he started from.

Never heard of this one but sounds interestring enough to hunt a copy down:)

For anybody else that might be interested, I managed to track down a copy of this through the Amazon Marketplace. The fact that Amazon didn't carry it
themselves leads me to suspect that it might be out of print.

I hope you like it, Foxbat. The local bookstore chain here in Milwaukee usually has paperbacks of it on their shelves, though I was there yesterday and they did not.
