I must find this books name

Hi out there......Back in 1997(ish) I read a book which now I want to read again but for the life of me cannot remember the books name or the author. So here goes.....the story as I remember was about an alien type thing who ended up on our planet and was being chased by another alien, the reason for this I am not sure now but the alien that was being chased had to get back to his craft before it was caught. The thing I do remember was that the first image or thing that the good alien saw was a dolphin.....but could not say the word dolphin but instead called it dorphin or dophin. Two people were helping this life form return before it was trapped in the other aliens craft were it was to be killed or brainwashed.....because it was clever.

I am sorry if all this is a tad vague but it is all I can remember of the story.

Don't think so.....I thought it may have been a Koontz type novel but I am still at a loss...

this sounds like ' I am number four' but that was published later than your estimated date. early in the story he was looking at dolphins.
