Rare river dolphin may be extinct

If this is true, it is truly saddening -- not to mention frustrating, especially in light of this:

The species (Lipotes vexillifer) was the only remaining member of the Lipotidae, an ancient mammal family that is understood to have separated from other marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and porpoises, about 40-20 million years ago.

To have killed off the last species of a particular branch... that somehow just seems to make it all the worse.....:(

Yes Taly, I read this worrying news this morning, I also hope it's not true but the dam is really damaging. If the government, any governments don't only see the immediate economic interests our planet would've been in a much better state.

Agree totally. There was an item regarding this topic on BBC Breakfast News this morning and, even more depressing, there are several other species living in or around the Yangste River that are under threat of extinction if preventative action isn't taken. :(

Which, unfortunately, it probably won't be. Makes me depressed and embarrassed to be human, this sort of thing.:(

Then again, it might not be! :)

Extinct Dolphin

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man has videotaped a large white animal swimming in the Yangtze river, which experts say is a dolphin species unique to China and feared extinct, the official Xinhua agency reported on Wednesday.
The last confirmed sighting of the long-beaked, nearly blind baiji was in 2004. After an international team failed to find a single dolphin on a six-week expedition last year the species was classified as critically endangered and possibly extinct.

Hopefully the sighting was of the Lipotes vexillifer.

Let's hope that if it is, it's not alone... and that there are enough to begin a repopulation.....
