Curious as to why no character ever smoked?

Unless my memory is really bad... There's sourleaf for chewing, Arbor Gold for drinking, but don't recall any character ever lighting a pipe. I can easily picture Tyrion and Bronn smoking pipes as they conspired. Bah just a minor detail but for such a gritty world I just thought smoking would be a part of it. Has George Martin ever said anything about this? Or does anyone have a theory as to why nobody smokes in Westeros?

I never really noticed. But maybe George is anti-smoking? Who knows...

It's been awhile since I read them, but I fancy someone smoked a pipe. I'm thinking Commander Mormont, or maybe Craster?

I went back to check Mormont and nope all he does is eat and drink and feed his raven, no smoking.

As for Craster, heh he does alot of strange things but definately never lit a pipe.

I don't think we can say big George is anti-smoking cause come to think of it some of the other stuff that happens in this book... much worse than smoking and I'm sure he's not pro hang someone from a tree and shove a chunk of salt down their throat.

I don't know why but it bugs me that there was smoking in LOTR and in ASOIAF with all it's taverns and whores and cut-throats not one puff. It's a mystery...

Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal smoke :)

(and so am I as I type this)

Hey Sandor, do you have a light? o_O

Oh no! Smoking is bad! You should die young and healthy as most of the true knights at the Seven Kingdoms! :)

Good observation. With all the other stuff going on in the books you'd think smoking would be a minor vice. I wouldn't find hearing about Jaime lighting up a nice fine cigar during one of the chapters. :)
