A salute to the Gentleman from Angell Street, who brought more magic to our world than he knew....

Happy Birthday, HPL, even if you aren't there to hear.....

Here, Here! Hoist the glass high in Howard's name! Genius, master fantatiste, scholar and mentor to a whole generation of genre writers, his kind remains without peer in both the last and our new century.

"That is not dead which can eternal lie....."

Happy birthday HPL. I wish you could have seen how your tales have touched us.

As I noted on the On This Day thread, Happy Birthday Mr Lovecraft!!

What present would you give HPL?

I'd give him a copy of the HPLHS radio play of At The Mountains of Madness as a delightful adaptation of one of his most ambitious works.

If he would stil be here,he'd be 118 years old,so he probably wouldnt get what you'd say anyway.

Stil,salute.

Why is HPL so hard to find? i've never come across him in my library and really want to read him. Whats the best book to start with,as an introduction to the great man?

It really is difficult to answer that, as various stories "hit the spot" for different readers. However, I'd suggest the Penguin editions myself, both because they have a good selection in each volume, and -- if you like the stories themselves -- a lot of good additional material not available in most editions.

On the other hand, if you'd prefer to go with an older edition, I'd strongly suggest the Arkham House editions published frpm the mid-1980s on; if you're bent on getting the older paperback editions (which are often textually very corrupt -- sometimes enough to so quite alter the reading of a story in many ways), I'd suggest reading one of the "Best of" collections that has been put out. There's also the Library of America volume, which is a very good selection of his work; or Tales, by H. P. Lovecraft, edited by Joyce Carol Oates (though I personally found her introduction more misleading than otherwise), and it excludes some of his best work....

Here's a good source for helping to decide what you're after....

HPLA - Sources of Lovecraft's Works

I see Nesa's suggested the online versions... like the earlier editions, though, those are frequently corrupt texts, so I'd not base my opinion on HPL on them, but they are a handy available source....

Thanks JD,I'll look out for the penguin edition, surely that must be widely available in bookshops! Oh and i can't read online stories, call me old fashioned but i like to to have a book in my hand.
