A few years, two or three back, in High school I took a science fiction class. In it we covered a story that I didnt get to read much of the first time around. I don't remember tons of details but I liked the story and cannot remember the author or title of it.

The story went something like this. There were was a war going on in space. Humans Vs. Aliens. During this war, an unknown deity takes one of each race and places them on a battlefield (never explained exaclty where it was) where there were blue sands, various terrain (white and blue) and a scorching hot sun. This deity makes itself known in the form of a voice and speaks do each race member and says that the conditions are equally unfavorable to each race and that they are to fight to the death. The alien is described as a sphere with a divide around it's equator, through which it stretches a tentacle for manipulating things. The human and the alien quickly realize there is an invisible barrier in the middle of the battleground and the human realizes that only unconcious objects/matter can pass through the barrier, using this he knocks himself out and rolls to the other side of the barrier. Just before the red alien rolls into him to fight, he awakens and they fight for a moment before the human wins. When he wins he is back in ship and all of the enemy ships are destroyed mysteriously. And that is the end.

Does anyone by chance know what this is called? I would absolutely love it if someone could tell me the name of this story and it's author. Thank you.

The story is the classic "Arena", by Fredric Brown... many times anthologized, and in fact adapted for an episode of the original Star Trek series....

Thank you very very much, I managed to find it now and am currently reading it. I appreciate the help. Thanks once again.

You're quite welcome. This was a favorite of mine growing up and, having reread it about two years ago, I find that it still holds up quite well....
