Sci-fi channel has announced a contest running between 8/27 and 9/7 for fans to vote and choose from three different covers.

Vote now and participate in choosing the cover. American viewers get an exclusive preview as a thank you. Unfortunately non-Americans won't be able to see it yet.

This is the only thread I could find that gets into the subject I'm steamed about. The "Razor" episode will be aired this Saturday. A reporter for the local rag wrote an article about it, complete with a Jamie Bamber interview. Here's the article:

FresnoBee.com: TV: Taking the 'Battlestar' helm

What ticked me off was the attitude (mostly Bamber's, apparently) that special effects had to be thrown in to satisfy the "core sci-fi audience". Yes, we all know that SF fans are way too dense to be able to follow a story unless there are exploding spaceships.

Regards,

Jim

He does a have point cause he is talking about core sci-fi Tv audience.

People that feed on shows like Star Trek. Those are always more about how the aliens look, special effects than anything esle.....

I don't disagree with what you say, but the reveerse is often the operative principle. TV is geared to the lowest common denominator. Always has been. Cable gives us some better choices, but to get the biggest demographic, you have to sell the product. So, in many ways, the bells & whistles (spaceships and aliens) are geared to the causal viewer as opposed to the "Hardcore Sci-Fi fan".

I'm not sure what that says about those of us who both read good SF and also happen to watch movies and tv in the genre. There are a lot of stinkers on tv and in the theaters. I'm not even a Battlestar fan. I preferred Firefly because the scripts were more imaginative and because it never tried to be something it wasn't. Hey, it was a western with a few gizmos thrown in.

Here's a thought: Compare the merits of the book Dune with the merits of the David Lynch film and the SciFi channel mini-series. Which of the three was most faithful to the concepts of the story and scenario involved? Never mind that the visual media efforts were based on the novel. Who portrayed it the best? How much "dumbing down" was there?

Does it even matter???

Which is why i dont really watch SF outside cable where the great SF tv shows are. The big tv networks SF shows are as you say geared so much to causal viewer that its dumbed to spaceships and alien.

Now that i think about, i think he should have more belief in BSG fanbase people like me that dont watch character and story based SF like BSG for the special effects.

Who watches BSG for special effects? It made him sound stupid really. I can see why you reacted.

Firefly was great prolly my fav SF tv show ever cause of the characters, the writing, specially the humor.

Its a shame that BSG will be gone soon too.

It means in only in couple of years the best SF shows are gone. First Firefly,Farscape,SG1 and now BSG.

Cant say anything about Dune since i havent read or watched the movie, mini series. I have ordered the book though.
