fantasy trilogy about blacksmith, shaman called iron....

I am trying to find a trilogy about a boy who trains to become a backsmith and is trained to be the best in the world.i think it was a by a female author and had iron in the title.I can remember the blackmith made some wings so he could fly and also some silver shackles which were put on him to bind him.
anyone able to help.
Also after a set of books set in a land where a japanese style caste system was predominant full of intrique and political espionage.
