so the basic plot for the series is that a bunch of alien species allied together, called W.E.A.V.E., are fighting against another bunch of allied alien species. the enemies have the ability to control the mind of any other alien species except humans. they grow their babies on their backs rather than reproducing through sex.
so this little ship from the W.E.A.V.E. sets out to explore for new allies and it finds earth. they are shocked that humans are so violent. most of the species in the W.E.A.V.E. are peaceful. even the ones that fight do it reluctantly. they are also shocked by earth's geology, which is highly unstable compared to their home worlds, which only have one continent and no volcanic activity.
the main human character in one of the books is a musician and one scene i remember from the book is where the aliens sneak up on him in his boat and he accidentally breaks the hand of one of them. startled at seeing aliens, he runs through the door and jumps into the water, only to be confronted by giant aquatic frogs.
the aliens talk to the main human character and they set up a base underneath his boat. they manufacture gold down their and go out disguised as humans with the main human character and recruit humans for the war.
in another book in this series the war is nearly over but a large female crane like character, nicknamed canaries by human soldiers, is concerned that the humans will turn on their allies once the war is over because they are so violent. her species are very peaceful. so much so that they faint at the slightest hint of violence. the character of this species that is focused on in the book conditioned herself to be able to study humans, even going so far as to go out into the battlefield with them.
during the series humans expand from earth and colonize two or three other planets.
whew, i think that's all i remember. can anyone tell me what this series is and maybe who wrote it too?
