And I am sure that I will get a this is known to this question.

Are the Children of the Forest human?

I tried to find a thread on this.

Obviously the others are not human, but what of the children?

Well I don't really think it is known per say. But I doubt they are human. I always kinda thought they were like the anti-Others. But then again they may just be another race of humans that were not really killed off but just integrated into the population of the invading humans. If this is the case, Jojen (with the green dreams) and the Starks (with their warging) could have a little of the children's blood in them. But in the end, I really don't know.

The children of the forest are a non-human species, dimunitive in size (the First Men they warred against towered over them). They had greenseers and created the faces on the weirwood trees. They worshiped the nameless and numerous old gods of the forest. They had mighty magic, and shattered the Arm of Dorne (a land bridge linking Westeros to the eastern continent) and helped build the Wall.

They vanished after the War For the Dawn 8,000 years prior to the books beginning, and the few who remained seem to have disappeared during the Andal invasion of 2,000-odd years later. The prevailing theory is that went beyond the Wall.

Aside from that, not much else is known. I have a theory that the Others have an interesting relationship with the children (perhaps the children created them to war against the First Men, didn't need them, but then unleashed them by accident a few millennia later?). We'll probably find out more about them in the later books, or indeed in ADWD.

Yes, I do also think that there is a link between the Children and the Others.

Could it be that the Others are in fact the Children? Probably not, but just seeing if anyone else had this thought.

Are you sure they left before the Andals' invasion? I don't remember such thing
Btw Osha says that they exist beyond the Wall...

They're humanoid, so some interaction has probably taken place (the Reeds are notoriously little), i think there may be some left on an island close to Riverrun. Where it is prohibited for most to enter. Heart of the weirwood trees was there or so.

The andals destroyed all weirwood trees above the neck, so there power base there is probably destroyed. There are probably some left , since the magic of the weirwood trees is also still around.

They will probably play some important role, in a way through the Reeds they may already been doing so.

As for the connection to the Others, i think they are a force in the middle, the balancers. You have fire on one side, ice on the other. Both in their extremes lead to the same thing. You need both to create life, so in the middle you find the green. The balancers.
