Chris Bunch's Last Legion and Star Risk Novels

If you're looking for brainless milSF, you could do worse than the Last Legion.

If you want something more substantial than pulp milSF, look elsewhere (David Drake's Hammer's Slammers series, for instance).

Have not read Last legion that I am aware of. Star Risk is OK as a lightweight quick read. Don't expect anything engrossing though.

His Sten series, Shadow War trilogy and Seer King series are far far better, try those instead.

And his novel Corsair is a favorite of mine. :)

I too really enjoyed his Corsair novel. I also like the Dragonmaster series as well.

I haven't read his other stuff (is his writing style fairly consistent?), but I have read the Star Risk novels and, as said above, they are a brainless, over the top, sex/guns/massive explosions romp that is most likely the best written crap I have ever read (and I mean that in a good way). They don't have any real substance and his new one -double cross program is the name I remember- has so many blind turns and twists that I'm surprised he can keep it all straight. Honestly though, if you don't want to read a heavily thoughtful novel, they're great and not in a 'gloss over all the badly written portions' way.

His Sten series

The Sten series was OK, but it dragged so towards the end I am sure it could have been cut by at least a book without reducing the story.

However, I do agree that the Shadow War books are better for a more 'thinking' read.

Yup, mindless scifi action was what I was looking for.

Okay, I'm going to hijack my own thread. What about:
  • William Dietz's Legion of the Damn
  • Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet
  • Neal Asher novels.
