Martin fans read Malazan?

Who here on this forum has read Erikson's series? I heard alot about it so I started on book 1 while I wait for Martin's next book.

Anyone else tackle this series?

Yes. Erikson is the polar opposite to Martin (ridiculously high magic use, low levels of characterisation with a few exceptions, churns out his books ridiculously quickly, sometimes too quickly given the often slapdash editing) but I'd say he's still a really good author, not far behind Martin in the quality stakes.

I've read up to Reaper's Gale.

There's a rather steep initial learning curve to get into the books, it took me until the second half of Gardens of the Moon to become acclimated enough to start to enjoy his world.

If you can get to that point they are a very good read.

I'm 150 pages into Gardens and I'm quite impressed so far. At least I figure Erikson will finish the series soon enough, I'm not so confident on Martin's finishing Ice&Fire (man that would suck)

As for Erikson, I am almost finished Gardens of the Moon and agree with Wiggum's assessment. If you can get past the first 1/3 or so of the book, things fall into place better and I am enjoying it. I do admit, it is taking a hell of a long time to read it though.

Hi there, a fellow Martin fan here who can't stand this waiting. After the FfC I read the series again, than I read Dreamsongs, than some stand-alone books, and now I read Gardens of the Moon. It was quiet an enjoyable read, the start was a bit hazy but the last 150-100 pages were non-stoping adrenalin rush.

Erikson is drastically different than Martin, I agree. Still, I look forward to continue with the Malazan Book of the Fallen. I'll probably be finished with it before DwD.

I just finished GOTM. Since ASOIF, easily the best fantasy book I have ever read.

I agree whole heartedly and this is pretty much where I'm at.

often when I really love a book I find it hard to put down and then I pick it up again as soon as i can so I can see what coming next!. with GotM it's been more of a "okay, lets do some more reading" kind of literary experience, though it has been getting better the further I trudge into it, and I'm pretty happy that I've stuck with it as it's starting to pay off.

That is absolutely true. Those last 100 pages or so, I could not put the darn book down and almost missed my bus stops a few times.

Took me a long while to get into the first book, writing style is a bit off for what I'm used to. Now I'm almost 400 pages in and I think it's getting REAL good. Difficult to keep all the characters in order, and the fact that the book is chalk full of magic and gods is something new to me. Nice refreshing change from Ice&Fire though.
