Can anyone make some Greg Egan recommendations? I feel like I should try a local author (well, Perth is 4000KM away). I've noted some very emphatic reviews of Diaspora, basically stating it is boring, so I'll give that a miss.

Diaspora is a very difficult book, mainly because Egan spends large tracts of it focusing on the science a whole lot more than the actual story. Permutation City is very good, as are Quarantine, Shild's Ladder and Teranesia.

I've just finished Greg Egan's 'Diaspora', and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Mind you, my degree was in Maths and Physics (albeit in 1990), and that was certainly a great help with the concepts explored in the book. Nonetheless, I thought Egan managed to incorporate them into an interesting story about characters seeking a goal.

I'd recommend it - but only for people who are either familiar with maths and physics to a reasonably advanced level, or who like a challenge! :)

There certainly used to be, dask - I've a collection of his called Axiomatic. I would assume it's still available. There's also Luminous, though I've not seen that one in my local Waterstone's recently.

Axiomatic contains one of my favourite and creepy Sci-Fi short stories (Learning to be Me) as well as some other great shorts.

Sounds good. I'll check the several used book stores downtown.

I see Amazon has most of them including Axiomatic, Luminous and Dark Integers, but the prices are exorbitant. The respective prices for used paperback copies at the moment are:$24.98, $14.98 and $152.64

Wow, Dark Integers is pretty expensive at AbeBooks and eBay too. I'm glad I got my copy of it while it was still in print.

It's a combination of low mainstream popularity which leads to low print numbers (I've barely ever seen an Egan book at a local Brick & Mortar store), combined a heavy popularity among core fans. I guess if you see an Egan book nestled into a shelf in some remote used book store, don't hesitate to get it.
