Need help finding fantasy book from my childhood

I read this relatively short fantasy novel (150-300 pages) back in the late 70's or early 80's. It was about a wizard who lived alone in a house that had many many cabinets and things that needed keys to open them. But there was one drawer that he had no key to. I also recal something about a snow-globe sort of thing that he had made in his youth as an apprentice when partnered with the now evil bad guy wizard.

I would love to find this again. Help?

That somehow sounds like something from CS Lewis's Narnia books, but I'm almost sure it isn't. Sounds interesting, and hopefully someone here will be able to spot this one for you.

Was it a children's book, and do you have any idea if it was published in 70s or earlier?
