I've been driving myself crazy trying to remember a book I read probably around 12 years ago. I'm not sure if it was very popular and I unfortunately only remember a little about it. The main character was a woman who's totem animal, not sure if they referred to it this way, was a mountain lion or puma. The cover of the book had her and the mountain lion on it. I remember her going on some journey and I think I vaguely remember her being able to shape shift into a mountain lion, but not for too long and her being captured. For some reason I remember some controversy with her totem animal, like people with wild cat totems were shunned or something.
The parts in blue are the parts I'm definitely sure of.
