Vernor Vinge

Really?

OK, I'm not a big fan of Vinge but his novel Rainbow's End recently won the Hugo award for best novel, so why not start there?

Some of his early work is quite good, but the logical starting point, IMHO, is with "A Fire Upon the Deep", which won him the Hugo. The logical next book would be "A Deepness in the Sky", which is a prequel and also very good.

I've only read A Fire Upon the Deep, but I really enjoyed it. It was a very interesting mix of space opera and fantasy. I'll have to look out for Rainbow's End.

I've only read A Fire Upon the Deep. I thought it was pretty good. I plan on reading A Deepness in the Sky sometime this month.

I'd recommend reading "A Fire Upon The Deep" then "A Deepness in the Sky", both of which are excellent novels (despite a few flaws).

The Peace War/Marooned In Realtime duology is quite good as well, although the second book is significantly better than the first.

Rainbows End is good as well, but although the world-building and characterisation is good and there's plenty of interesting ideas in it, the plot is a bit unexciting compared to his two other Hugo-winners.

Agreed, which is why I voted for Michael Flynn's Eifelheim for the Hugos but Meh...my horse didn't get up..:(

I would have recommended these at the outset, but, as good as they are, I didn't see them in the same league as the Deepness/Fire pairing. But I feel they are certainly worth the effort.
