Has anybody read this series? It's by Tracy Hickman & Margaret Weis ... the first book is called Forging the Dark Sword. I currently just started on the first book and it seems really interesting. The basic premise is about a world entirely dominated by magic, and those without magic are completely outcast or killed. For me this is a nice twist because I've yet to read a book which explores "technology" and doing away with magic. But then again, my reading thus far is somewhat limited ;)

I read Darksward a long while ago and remember really enjoying it but could not get my hands on the 3rd book at the time, one trilogy I always wished I'd finnished and never got round to!

Let me know if it finnishes as well as it starts!

Many years ago I began the first book. I got about two chapters in, set the book down, and have never picked it up again. I own all three, though I'm not sure why.

I finished the first one and was completely unimpressed. I really disliked most of the characters and doubt I will finish the series. Oh well ..... onto bigger and better things!

I read the Dark Sword trilogy about 15 years ago and found it was pretty stabdard fare. I know Weiss and Hickmann are not exactly heavyweights in terms of cutting edge speculative fiction but I quite enjoyed their Dragon Gate cycle books.

HEY GUYS!
Just like to tell you all that I read this series over the past month and finished it! It was great! I would have to say I didn't like the ending all that much, but that's just my opinion. I would recomend reading it, though. It was a great reading experience! Its slow to start, give it time

My problem with this series was there was no one in it I liked. I much preferd the rose and the profit and Wies's solo star of the gardians.

Also enjoyed the whole deathgate cyle (bit of a predictable end) and the dragon lance books.

I thoroughly enjoyed the darksword trilogy personally, found the ideas pretty original, though I suppose there is better out there, wheel of time series for example is a lot more complex an well written, but still, as far as standard fantasy goes I'd hafta say the darksword trilogy is quite good.

You've got to love these ten year old threads getting resurrected!

I first read this series back in the late 80's and I actually thought it was their best work, although I don't know how well it would stand up today.

The characters are all quite problematic, I can see why the OP didn't like them. But that was the point really. They were to find themselves later on in the trilogy.

Exactly, I think part of the point of the book was to NOT have that perfect, squeaky clean, never does a thing wrong character... And I loved it personally, wish I could get my hands on Legacy of the Darksword though, the sequel to the trilogy...

Having enjoyed the original Dragonlance series, I bought each of the original Darksword series upon publication. I was initially nonplussed, but it grew on me to the point where I'd have to agree that I enjoyed it, although I'm definitely in Gollum's camp about the Deathgate series far exceeding this one. I have Legacy, but it's among my to-be-reads (or is it my to-be-re-reads? :D). If you're anywhere near Maryland, Sim, I'll loan it to you when I'm done. ;)

I thought that the Deathgate cycle started well but went on too long and felt drawn out towards the end (perhaps they should have stuck to trilogies). I remember being particularly disappointed by the ending. I did really like the first four or five books in the series though.
