While I'm thinking of books I'd love to track down, I need to ask you about this one too. I only read it about three years ago, and have already forgotten the anuthor and title. It was set in a future Earth, in a Europe with a country called "Francey" and also in Canada. People were split along political lines, I think, the protagonist was a pilot or flyer, and the government were in a huge airship, skydome, something like that, above the capital city. The pilots were given a greater status, there was a love story going on, then a trek through Canadian wilderness and the discovery of uranium or plutonium. There were also references to Gaia and living Earth, and a beautiful garden inside the skydome.

Help?!

This sounds very much like Poul Anderson’s Orion Shall Rise (1983).

You’ve got a dirigible called Skyholm, talk of Francey, and a trek.

A lot of matches here: “The story takes place centuries after a nuclear holocaust wiped out most of earth's population and left much of the land devastated. Three major civilizations have emerged: The Domain which covers most of what is now Northern Europe, the Murai, a queen led nation of South Pacific seafarers and the Northwest Confederation based in the Northwest corner of North America. There are other smaller groups such as the Mong and the Yuan, Asian survivors of the disaster as well as the Espanyans in Southeastern Europe.

The Domain is protected by an immense dirigible called Skyholm which can deliver lasers anywhere in the Domain. The Murai are militarily, the strongest and see themselves as the keepers of the peace. They constantly look for any fissionable material in order to confiscate it. The Northwesterners or Norries as they call themselves are divided into lodges, the strongest of which are the Wolves. The Murai defeated the Norries in the Power War when they tried to build nuclear power plants.”
