Some sales figures from the Booker prize shortlist: by mid-August, the best-seller on the list had just topped 1,500 total sales, the worst-seller 231. The winner had managed 834 sales.
The same article observed that 60% of British authors earn less than £10,000 per year, and that median earnings are less than a quarter of the minimum wage.
