I've been a fan of Eddings for an age! And I've had the Elder Gods for at least a year and can't seem to get motivated to read the thing! Please could someone tell me its worth reading it and not just the same old same old.

The only others I've not read are the Codex with I gave up on and the one everyone says is rubbish, (can't think of the name just now).

Help I need to feel inspired!

I finished the Elder Gods last night. It was nice to re-vist Sephreania and Aphrael again. Whereas Althulas seemed a plagerism on the Belgarid and Mallorean, This seems to be a crib of the Elenium and Tumali. There are a few new characters (not many though) and some new jokes (but again not many) its feels very stiff and formal at the start, then flows into normal Eddings style, as if they forgot that they were writing a 'new' novel and fell into old habits.
Like all Eddings books It was charming and sweet, I'll probably read the followup, for habits sake, but i won't buy my own copy, i already of copies of the work by a different name.

If you've already bought it, you may as well read it so you haven't wasted your money. It isn't very good at all, but it is very easy to read and won't take up much time, so you may as well read it so that you can have an opinion on it, if for no other reason.

I borrowed The Elder Gods from the library, thank goodness. I have always enjoyed reading Eddings books but this one - definately not. Yes it was nice to catch up Aphrael and Sephreania again, this I thought was the only highlight of the book.:(
I certainly will not be buying a copy for my bookcase.

I grew up on David Eddings. I haven't read a book of his in years though. Last month a relative loaned me "Elder Gods." I couldn't get very far. Is it the same person writing these? Or did I judge books differently when I was a teenager?

Possibly a bit of both. I have found that my taste in literature has changed over the years. Elder Gods certainly seemed as if it was written by somebody else and yet other readers have disagreed, noting that this was possibly his best book.
More like a vicious circle I would say.:)

Yes - The Elder Gods is good! Just get past the prologue. I read the prologue and thought it was rubbish but after that it got really good! stick with it!

Second book in the Series - The Treasured One

Is it as good as or better than The Elder Gods?

I will also mention that here in Western Australia they have a Booktrack. This shows how well the books are selling.
Out of 20 - Crystal Gorge by David and Leigh Eddings come in at #14 which is quite good seeing as they weren't on the list at all last week.

Anyone read it yet?:)

possibly six of one and half a dozen of the others. the prologue and the very first chapters (can't remember how far cause i gave it back to the library), he was trying for a different voice. it was very stiff and formal. but it soon gave way to the old characters and sephrinia and aphreal soon emerged.
i own the belgarid, mallorean, tumali and ellenium with the two prequals. i wont, on principle buhy any of the others. why should i i already own them under another title.

Crystal Gorge is on my to read pile, will get round to it eventually. The books are repitive and predictable, just a re-hash of all his others, but when I read it I know I'll enjoy it.

is that the next book in the eldergods series? or another book? i've stopped keeping track, i'm sorry to say

Crystal Gorge is the third installment in the Dreamers series.Started it last night within the first few pages the men had gone fishing and surprise surprise a certain lady was refered to as the best cook in the world, but for some strange reason I quite enjoy Eddings particular style of fluff and sweetness but only a ssmall dose at a time.;)

The Prologue is scarily off putting, but the book itself is really really good! Well worth reading. Just finished the Treasured One, which I really liked as well. Go for it!

It's nice to see others who think that this is one of his worst works. I think I've lost faith in him.

10 points for pointing out every time he writes "without a hint of a smile".

Hey, there are lots of times I say or do things without a hint of a smile. That doesn't mean I am a rehash of David Eddings characters!
I actually thought that this newest series was far superior to Sparhawk and co stories.
Really looking forward to fourth installment.

Until Polgara and Durnik reveal the sexes of their twins, Make Mine Eddings.

It doesn't mean that he has to write "without a hint of a smile" every time, and he could at least try to come up with some new phrases!

Why did you prefer this to the other series? You're the first I've seen who thinks that - to me this was a novel almost indistinguishable from all the previous series - except it was worse written and more childish generally.

Well, I just found this thread a few days after I finished reading the Elder Gods series. It wasn't too bad, but it reminded me too much of everything else Eddings' has written, and the ending was a bit of a letdown for me. Not a very complicated read, and not without its' faults, but not too bad.

I felt a bit confused by the dreamer books too; I know there were the odd 'cutesy' moments in Eddings' previous works, but it seems to be constant in elder gods(?).

I think I'm going to have to go back and reread the belgariad et al to see if my brain has just changed my memories of those books to suit what I like now.

I found this series a little hard to get into, tenaciously I read them though and thought that they were so so until the ending and then I felt like what was the point, to write 4 books then end it like that.
