I just watched the Returner last night and I have to admit it was pretty good. I'm startin to think that Asia is cornering the market on quality filmmaking. It was a pretty decent sci fi flick, the only flaw I'll cite is that the musical score was a little weak especially at the slow times. The piano solo was a little annoying and childish but I didn't judge the movie for it, I was still able to enjoy it.

It is a pretty decent film. These same people went on to do Casshern which is very good too.

Quite liked Returner though it sounded awful in English. Everyone had funnily pitched voices. Liked it much better in the original with sub-titles.

Neat plot with some pretty good acting. Some very memorable characters as well. Was a good movie all in.

Heh if you think this shows quality of asian filmaking. You need to see more Korean dramas and thrillers. That film industry is the best in the world when it comes to thrillers specially. If i see a new korean movie i get it without a second look cause my perfect record with renting them. I brag about to my family and friends of how many good movies from there they have seen cause of me :p

Old Boy, A Bittersweet life is only the tip of the ice ;)

This movie was good. The action was pretty damn cool. Not the best SF i have seen from Asia but still i enjoyed watching it.

lol, I need to clarify that I'm not a horror fan. I've never seen Old Boy but I've watched AVI's show on the top one hundred scariest movies ever and I have to say that movie has some pretty disturbing scenes in it. I really don't have much of a stomache for that kind of thing. But for someone who wants to see stuff that you will rarely ever see in mainstream hollywood and if you think you're strong enough for it then go for it. As a sci fi fan that's where I will always gravitate. I actually just added Natural City to my que on Netflix so I should get to watch it in a few days.

Old Boy isnt horror. Its great and sick thriller. Its more creepier than any horror i have seen but that has nothing to with it being scary but how sick
it is specially the latter half of the movie.

Dont let something like its rep stop you. Its a must see movie whether you will like it or not.

Returner/Ritana

Just saw this (under a third, Mexican, name--Asesino Solitario--which makes NO sense like so many titles here)

VERY cool Japanese/Chinese/American flick.

It blends elements of ET, Matrix, Transformers, Terminator (especially) into a smooth progression that constantly prods recall of those films without looking like a knockoff.

The main premise is a good one...OK, girl from future goes back to prevent an earth-destroying war. Same old, same old. But it turns out it's not just aliens vs predator. Rotten human greed and awful gangsters are involved.

And, not surprizingly, bring together the desitinies of everybody involved, especially the lone wolf hitman who reluctantly helps future girl prevent the end of the human race and all that ****.

Some really great faces. The bad guy is just a wonderful perverted jackal...copping a lot of licks from Gary Oldman's baddy in "The Professional"

But the real show is Anne Suzuki as "Milly" the cutie from the future. She's as darling as any anime heroine, just dripping a punk-styled Japanese "kawaii", but a major little toughie when it's time to rumble.

The effects are very cool, the production values everything we've become accustomed to.

The script is interesting because it manages to walk a fine line between innovation and stock stuff. I would say it does something new while continually flirting the familiar in our faces.

Have no idea how available this in the States, but it's definitely worth a view because it's a fun flick that takes some chances in a different way, and a script worth taking note of for pretty perverse reasons.
