Wolf's Rain - the book

Well, floating round Amazon, I came across a book version of Wolf's Rain and was wondering if anyone here has read the book and can tell me if it is any good. Its a book, but here I have more chance of catching anime fans

I've been watching the series again on television, and I'm definitely interested in reading the book. I'll be interested in finding out if the series was based on the book, or the other way around, too.
