Hallow everybody!
Just signed in.
I have read the first three installations of ASOIAF years ago and just finished AFFC and the hedge knight novels.
Two questions (that you are probably already board from).
How did Dunkens’ shield came to the old armory at Tarth? And is there any significance to the fact Briene chose to depict his symbols on her new shield?
Any thoughts?

Yes there is.

I dont know if the identitys been confirmed but it has been mentioned by Martin himself that someone from Duncan the Talls lineage is in ASOIAF. Im kinda thinking that meant Brienne...

Of course I never did quite figure out how Dunk manage to be Commander of the Kingsguard and sire children....

a matter of spirit

I don't think it is a matter of blood as much as a matter of heritage.
jame mentions dunk as one of the more noble commanders when he raffles trough the white book at the end of ASOS.
Master Ammon tells Jon about his coming to the wall and mentions egg.
Mayhaps he came to tarth at some time or another, maybe some of his spirit is with briene and jame. Maybe the shield marks briene for a position in another, more honorable kingsgurd? Maybe dannys?

Umm well yeah but George did say an offspring of Dunks was in the series....so yer guess is as good as mine.

so thats what the shield was all about! I havent read the prequel novellas, and I did think a bit too much time was spent talking about that shield.
