This has been bothering me a bit. I don't know if there has already been a thread about this (cue a bevy of links), but I remember in Brienne's last POV chapter, as she's being strung up, GRRM says she shouts a single word (possibly to stop them killing her). What was the word?

Jaime? Because of their budding relationship (of sorts).

Arya? Because Brienne had recently heard news of Arya's whereabouts an may have wanted to sway Stoneheart's... um... stone heart.

Sapphires? Because this saved her in her previous encounter with bandits.

Alternatively, I may have just misremembered the whole thing.

Thoughts, ideas, theories...?

What about simply YES!

She agrees to kill Jamie to save her own life. Thus setting up a heart-tug story line ( love Jamie-have to kill him-even though he saved me). Perhaps she expects to get out of it but UnCat will have something planned. Perhaps Brienne leading him to a trap to be killed by the thing he despises... ARCHERS! ( would be like GRRM, Jamie has already described his hatred for the cowards in the past. you can just see it, looking back through the books at the points he mentions archers and thinking.....oh well just wait..)

ARCHERS OR NOT MARK MY WORDS FOLKS BRIENNE WILL KILL JAMIE!

I need to find The Hedge Knight stories and read them. Mayhaps Duncan's life will foreshadow Brienne's.
 
When I first came to this forum I tried looking for the old threads about Brienne's word. I had a lot of trouble reading through them since they are long and full of random banter. I've heard in a lot of places that the word is "sword" but I've yet to find the exact explanation for it. Can someone explain why the word is "sword" and why that saves her?
 
I'm a little foggy here, but I beleive she is given the choice of 2 words "noose" or "sword". If she should pick "sword" she is to kill Jaime, and "noose"......well she is in it already. Only one way to get out.
 
I had forgotten about her choice. (its things like this that are having me reread the series). Well, that would make it seem like the only word she would scream is "sword", why say noose when you are already in one?

Other words she may have said to save her life....

Arya....she had been told that Arya was with the Hound earlier and mayhaps thinks this knowledge will spare her life...but as we learn from the "hanging of Merret Frey" chapter the brotherhood knows Arya was with the Hound and thus knows shes's still alive.

Hound...Mayhaps she actually put two and two together and figured out the Hound is still alive and knowing that Arya was with him makes him a target for the Brotherhood...

But I agree "sword" is most likely. But with Brienne theres no trap or plan neccessary on Catelyns part....her honor is enough to make her go.

Oh, and we already covered names of people, which the text should of read "And she yelled a name" and not a "word"...But this may be quibbling and GRRM liked to use of "word" instead of "name" as it made for a better cliffhanger.
 
names are also words my friend....names are also words....

and the hound is not a proper noun so its okay to call it a word.
 
The sword's name is Oathbreaker. Wait, I gotta do this right...

Brienne: Whose sword is this?

Jaime: It's Valyrian Steel, baby.

Brienne: Whose Valyrian Steel is this?

Jaime: It's Ned's.

Brienne: Who's Ned?

Jaime: Ned's dead, baby. Ned's dead.

Mayhaps Brienne says the word to Thoros... "Next!"... as in "I wanna be the next person you bring back to life so I can take my sword and cut out her stone heart!"
 
Like how Dunk was really an over-tall lass who dressed up as a man, became a knight, saved the king, and gave birth to a long line of warrior women? No worries, I won't say a thing...

You really need to lay your hands on those stories, though, my friend.

Now I know the diff between Dunk and Brienne... Dunk had kids!

Mayhaps I'll make it a priority as a Christmas present to myself.
 
I wonder what kind of kids Brienne and Ser Gregor could produce. Maybe they could make a little army of Mountains that Ride.
