ok using the jargon:
velocity dispersion versus age relation for solar neighbourhood stars show an abrupt velocity dispersion increase 8 Gigayears ago,during a chaotic period of hierarchical clustering at high redshift

Um, this would seem due to our galaxy 'eating' one or more dwarf galaxies...

Bit like comets have wild distribution of orbits, so meteorite showers may be back-tracked to originating body...
