Pardon my eagerness, but I have long searched for a fantasy forum with fellow Amber fans, and now that I have found one I'm going to turn into a rabid fangirl.

So who is your favourite prince/princess of Amber, and why?

Julian is probably my favourite fantasy character of all-time, even though there is so little about him. I was quite young when I read the series, and Julian was the first blatantly bastardly character--who wasn't a villain--that I had come across in a fantasy book, and I instantly fell in love with his unabashed vanity and pettiness. That bit when he leaves the room in Sign of the Unicorn and says "Now you can all talk about me" gets me every time.

Hi, BloodAndSouls, and welcome to the Zelazny sub-forum!

My favourite Amberite is Corwin because he starts as an arrogant bestard and ends up as a chivalrous bestard.

Along with Jack of Shadows, Corwin is one of those characters whose personal growth RZ was a past master at depicting.

Corwin, of course! But if I had to choose someone else, I guess it would be Random. Both end up doing Oberon proud in their own way and both are ultimately good guys despite their powers over shadowstuff.

Although it's Corwin again (who else?!), I always had a bit of fascination for Benedict; not sure exactly why....

The concept of a person being above suspicion because they're so powerful that they don't have to be underhanded is pretty cool, which is why I like Benedict more than any of Corwin's siblings.

I think I'd have to go with Benedict as well - there's a lot to be said for someone who travels through different Shadows to see how battles and wars pan out with differing criteria...or maybe that's just my OCD appreciation.

CT.

Probably Bleys. He had the greatest action scene in the book. Fighting all the way to the steps of Kolvir. Say what you will about Bleys that day he fought as befit his rank.

Naturally Corwin, but I do wish he had taken Bill Roth, his neighbour in the USA to Amber, and we'd seen it through his eyes.....he did promise him the trip, but it never happened......

Did you not read the second Amber series? Roth did visit Amber and settled there, becoming a lawyer for Random.

I guess this means you get a discount on The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny, B-man!:D;)

I liked Fiona.......... but then again I was always a sucker for a redhead.

I think I liked Random and Benedict best, although Gerard would probably be a nice bloke to have a chat with. Out of the girls I think possibly Fiona cause she was quite obviously devious, but she didn't really care.

I'm with Kenneth, Bleys is a total badass. He has his army ready to go against the alliance of Eric even before he knows Corwin can back him. Also I love the scene when they're charing up the steps of Kolvir where they each duel the massive line of soldiers.

Corwyn of course is my favorite Amberite.
The true hero overcoming his personal demons to then protect the realm and that onery bunch of buzzards and witches, er - uh-hmmm, I mean his family.

Eric is my second favorite.

Come on everybody, even Corwyn came to realize he wanted Amber because Eric had it, not because he wanted to serve the Kingdom.

Eric also did the right thing when he was dying and it came to the well being of Amber which Corwyn initially did not. It was his own curse manifested by Brand he had to save Amber from.

Corwyn could have been or become Eric had he been the better swordsman before spending a few centuries in the dimension of Earth practicing his martial art.

Eric could have also killed Corwyn twice, both times however he spared his life and banished him - once physically without his memory, the second time firguratively by taking away his ability to control shadow.

After Eric my favorite Amberite was Oberon.

One tough SOU (son of a Unicorn) who put that ignorant idiot Gerard back in his place when he needed it. He left Amber often because with his scheming children staying in Amber too long at a time he probably would have wound up with a permanent bedroom in the family graveyard.

Corwyn also acknowledged that had Oberon designated an heir that most likely would have been the equivalant of signing a death warrant.

After Oberon I liked Brand.

Yea, Brand was the villain but he took them all on and damn near came out on top. Only Corwyn was able to match him and that was as much by sheer will, cunning and luck as it was by talent and strength. Brand had become a living trump, the ultimate sorcerer.

1. Corwyn
2. Eric
3. Oberon
4. Brand

Oh my God, thinking about it makes me want to read it again.
To me The Chronicles of Amber will always be the first 5 novels.

I'm not sure what the second five were or were all about but they certainly weren't Zelazny.

I pretty much liked them all from the first five books, they were all so distinctive. Corwin comes first of course, second would be Caine.

In the second set there were some characters I didn't like. Merlin was only just OK but I took a dislike to Luke and kept hoping someone would bump him off (especially as he killed Caine!).
