Located in the hardback (pg 573) Here's the dialogue with question to follow:

Silence followed his speach. Edmure sat in his bath. Pia clutched the clothing to her breasts. The singer tightened a strong on his harp. Little Lew hollowed out a loaf of stale bread to make a trencher, prentending that he had not heard. With a trebuchet, Jamie thought. If his aunt had been there, would she still say Tyrion was Tywin's son?

Edmure Tully finally found his voice. "I could climb out of this tub and kill you where you stand, Kingslayer."

"You could try." Jamie waited. When Edmure made no move to rise, he said "I'll leave you to enjoy your food. Singer, play for our guest whilst he eats. You know the song, I trust."

"The one about the rain? Aye, my lord, I know it."

Edmure seemed to see the man for the first time. "No. Not him. Get him away from me."

"Why, it's just a song," Jamie said. "He cannot have that bad of a voice."

Well, the song is The Rains of Castamere. But I don't get it...who is the singer and why is Edmure so afraid?? Please help!!

The singer is Tom o' Sevens. He introduces himself to Jaime in a later chapter. I have no idea why Edmure is so afraid and I wondered about that myself during my reread.

He's not afraid, is he? Didn't Tom steal a girl Edmure was sweet on a few years previous?

You're probably right. It's one of those hundreds of tiny details we're supposed to remember throughout the course of the series ;).

I'm fairly certain it's in aSoS, and Tom tells the story in one of Arya's chapters, though I could be well off the mark. I must do a reread soon.

Ha, I just finished reading the entire series and I can't remember that tiny detail about Tom and Edmure. Sometimes it's all a bit overwhelming but I come here to help put myself put it all together.

Welcome shuckins!

When Catelyn captured Tyrion, Marillion rode along. He claimed to be close friends with Edmure, but Catelyn knew that Edmure had lost a girl to a singer which caused him to hate all singers.

It must be in an Arya POV that we find out that Tom was the one who stole the girl from Ed.

a fish

Tom not only stole a girl away from edmure, he also made a song about a fish, a floppy fish. And keep in mind that "the rains of castamer" was on the play list of the red wedding. All in all, tom o' seven singing that particular song is not exactly pure joy in edmures eyes.

It must be in an Arya POV that we find out that Tom was the one who stole the girl from Ed.

Or maybe we actually find out that Tom is the one who stole Edmure's girl right there in Jaime's POV in AFFC when Edmure sees Tom. It's not unlike GRRM to spread out little tiny clues like that hundreds of pages and several books apart. Then it's up to us to put it all together which is something that would be extremely hard without discussion sites like this :).
