From wikipedia I have this list:

Black iron (Ravenry)
Brass
Bronze (Astronomy)
Copper (History)
Gold (Economics)
Iron (Warcraft)
Lead
Pale steel (Smithing)
Pewter
Platinum
Red gold
Silver (Medicine and healing)
Steel
Tin
Valyrian steel (Magic and the occult) - Only one in one hundred holds a link of Valyrian steel; the study of magic is looked down upon by most Maesters.

Any left out any guesses on which metal means which craft?

Let's just try and find what we need for skills and then we can try to arrange them with a metal.

-geography
-knowledge of languages

any other suggestions?

There was a section in which Bran and Maester Luwin were talking about the metals and what they meant, and I think it was in the beginning of A Feast for Crows, but I can't remember offhand. Intermittently throughout the series the metals are discussed, but I've not committed any to memory.

Guess I'm not much help, huh!?

Bran. He does remember discussing some of these with Luwin. But these are probably the ones mentioned on the wiki.

I would imagine steel would equate to weapons craft.

I remember Jon saying something like "No matter how much you beat tin it doesn't change to steel" in relation to Sam using a maesters chain as a metaphor. Maybe someone else can check exactly what he says since I only have the first book and it's not in that. Since Jon uses tin as an example maybe one of Sam's strengths relates to tin.

In a Feast for Crows Pate tries for a link by being tested in his knowledge of the heavens.

Couldn't have been Feast, Luwin was dead by then, wasn't he? I imagine it was in Clash. Still, could be wrong - it's been so long since I reread them they are all bleeding together....

Gold: Accounting
Silver: Healing
Iron: Warcraft
Black Iron: Ravenry (mastery of)
Valyrian Steel: higher mysteries / magic

Nicked from the Tower of the Hand Encyclopedia. Kinda shabby. I know it was discussed more in depth in the books.

D'oh! Is this a double posting?! Looks like my brain cells are dead too! So much for new year's resolutions!!! : O
