If humans escaped to Midkemia, through a rift from universe X during the Chaos War, then did all other life now on midkemia also escape through the rift (apart from the elves etc).

I don't think so. Some creatures may have blindly fled through the rift, but most creatures are not as intelligent as the humans so it is very likely that most just evolved rather like our own Earth today. Sadly there isn't much to be said as the information just is not there

I would say that a lot of animal life was indigenous to the plqanet. After all, even tho they were the 'playthings' of the Valheru, the elves no doubt had need of some animals for food, others as beasts of burden, etc, even before the coming of man.

On a blue-green earth type planet, certain life forms evolve in the same way, whether you call it 'earth' or Midkemia'.

Some of the so-called lower life forms, like dogs, cats, cattle and horses, for example, probably made the journey alongside man. Remember that there were none of those species on Kelewan, tho they have similar ones.

The humans escaping to Midkemia suggest that thier idigenous planet was at risk, posibly even close to destruction, so I'd guess that they may have brought through some of thier own animals but it's unlikely that an animal would attempt to escape of it's own accord. I'd think an animal would have to be directed into a rift as it would be to frightened to enter of it's own accord.

Also, why did the humans escaping from the chaos wars choose to end up on the planet where the Valheru came from? if the valheru were successful then you couldn't have choosen a worse planet.

Rifts have been shown to be pretty unstable at times and may send you somewhere other than your original destination, so it's possible that Midkemia wasn't their first choice. Or they may have 'programmed' the rift to just send them to the closest planet that matched their dying one.

Not to mention that they were in a big hurry and probably weren't going to sit around too long debating over where to go.

As far as the animals go, I think they weren't given a choice, but brought along by their owners much as the animals that were taken across the prairies alongside covered wagons when the American west was settled.
