Hello,

I've recently been trying to find an animated fantasy movie that I watched when I was younger, but nobody seems to remember it. I asked at the retrojunk site but recieved no answers, so I'm hoping that since it is a fantasy movie, maybe somebody here will recognize it. Here's what I wrote at retrojunk:

I'm curious to know if anybody remembers a cartoon fantasy movie I watched when I was young (early to mid 90's, probably, but the movie could very well have been much older, as my memory is quite fuzzy and at the time I would not have been able to tell if the animation style appeared old or modern). All I can remember is a boy and a girl standing in front of some dark building (a castle?). The boy ends up holding a funny looking little creature, maybe it fell into his arms? I'm pretty sure he thought the thing was evil or pretty gross, but the girl said to him "he's smiling". The boy's response was something along the lines of "that's a smile?" I think.

This has been driving me nuts for a while, so I'd really appreciate any help :)

HMMM...that's pretty tough. Hopefully someone will be able to answer this one.

Do you remember any other details/scenes? Was it Japanese, European, US etc.....?

Unfortunately I can't remember anything else about it, but I'm fairly certain it was from North America, though there is a slight chance of it being from the UK. I was thinking about it some more today and I think the style was definitely fairly (90's era)modern, maybe not too far off from the style of 'The Princess and the Goblin' but I think the animation was done a little bit better than that, so it was probably released in the 90's or at least the late 80's.

Edit: I've lived in Canada all my life, so there's also the possibility that it was Canadian-made (I somehow doubt it, though)

The only one I can think of, with boy, girl, castle and funny-looking creature is The Black Cauldron, a Disney cartoon of 1985, one of the less succesfull ones.

I remeber that movie...:D

*snickers*

Are these the characters that you remember?

Unfortunately, I can't see the image!

Edit: I got it to load, but I'm fairly certain that the creature in the picture isn't the one I remember. I'll look into it, though!

Edit 2: I watched a few clips, and I'm still convinced that The Black Cauldron is not the movie I'm thinking of, or if it is, it was definitely not the furry little creature that the boy caught. The creature I remember was much uglier.

Hello! I just read your question, and I happen to know the answer.
That scene is from the movie "The pagemaster" the scene where an ugly book falls to the lap of an animated Macauly Caulkin, and the lady book says "look at his smile" to which he replays "is that a smile?". yes, it is from that movie.

ahh yes Frantaran is correct - I definatly remember that scene!
the start of that film is not animation - it makes a really cool transition into animation though -- gaint digital paint serpent!:)

Yes, it sounds like The Pagemaster. A cartoon that starts out as a live action film. It's where a boy and 3 library books fight through Horror, fantasy and adventure to reach the exit of the library. The girl you're talking about I think is the fantasy library book when this scene happens they are outside the house of Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde. They ring the doorbell and the book Horror falls into the boy's arms.
