Was Tyrion a Targaryen experiment?

I have never been on the side of Tyrion being a Targaryen.

However, when reading the Viper's story of his visit to House Lannister after Tyrion's birth, I get that Targaryen-experiment feel.

We know the Targs have been long in trying to bring back dragons. We know that the citadel has been long in ttrying to thwart the Targ plans. Perhaps the Targaryens eventually had to spread out their experiments with theif offspring, sowing their seeds around...

The Viper's story of all the rumors around tyrion's birth sounds just like other Targaryen experiments gone wrong. Remember Dany's hideous first child? i think this is what the Martells were picturing and anticipating.

In five years of lurking and two of posting on several GRRM boards, I have never seen that idea before

I like it, it's kind of twisted, but no, I don't think Tyrion is some kind of Targaryen experiment. Nice idea though.

Rereading the chapter where Tyrion meets the dragon skulls, therein may lie the answer to this thread's question.

It might explain some stuff. As in how he killed his (not anymore) own father. Why all of a sudden he sort of snapped and turned his back on his family. (besides of course that they were about to get rid of him)

The question remains though: why keep him around?

Cause he's awesome! It would suck bog time to lose Tyrion.

Also, when I read the part where he's with tthe skulls, I had thought it was so the author can tell us more info about the old kingdom.

Scalem, could you explain a bit more what you mean about the chapter with the dragon skulls? I don't really understand how it could answer the question in this thread.

This is an interesting theory,

The description (as far as I remember) of Dany's baby was surprisingly similar to Martells (?) description of Tyrion.

*subscribes to crackpot theory after necro*

I think Tyrion had more than enough reasons to "snap" and turn his back on his family.

Have to agree, succintly, with TK on this one.

From Tyrion's last POV chapter in ASOS:

[Tywin:] "You . . . you are no . . . no son of mine."
"Now that's where you're wrong, Father. Why I believe I'm you writ small."

Tyrion may or may not be a son of Tywin, but he gives no indication that he knows that he isn't in either his words or thoughts.

I'm open to the idea of him being a Targ, but it's unlikely. I think there are a lot of indications of his interest in dragons and fire as if he may become one in the future (cough cough, one of the three heads of the dragon, cough). On his way to Castle Black in Game of Thrones he likes cooking his bacon burnt black, to a crisp. Also on this trip he reveals to Jon that when he was younger he used to read about dragons, it was an obsession of his. He would even light fires and stare into them for hours. Those stories always stood out to me, smacking of foreshadowing.

But in reality though he bares a striking resemblance to his father with his aura of command (small though he may be) and of his ruthless cunning. His aunt saw enough of a similarity that I think there's no question he's his father's son. Tywin's intense dislike of him stems from his issues with being laughed at. He had said Tyrion's grandfather's men always laughed at him in their cups and really made an impression on him. Tyrion's mere existence incites embarrassment and unbecoming chatter. That of course combined with the death of his wife during childbirth is enough of an explanation for his hatred for his son, denying the responsibility of birthing him.

I was thinking more on the lines of Tywins wife being at the wrong place at the wrong time screwing up some plan of Aeron II (Rhaegar's dad?) .

The other lords would have been invited assuming that Dragons will come alive but the magic killed Tyrion's mother and disfigured him.

Sorry, again: NO!

Tyrion Lannister is a true Lannister.

I think it may ba a whole lot of wishing this is how the storyline goes or "this is how I would write if I were GRRM".

On the other hand, if I wrong, I have grown accustomed to the taste of crow. It's not bad with some hot pepper sauce on it.

You shouldn't get too complacent, TK: the penalty will soon be a dance with dragons. ;)

(Not that you're in the least wrong in this instance. :))

THat was the same as my last post...

Tyrion is a true Lannister , just that he was affected because his mom was in the wrong place at the wrong time :D ....

I am just throwing some ideas out there since most of what should be discussed is discussed already :(

Ha! Very good. I will like that punishment willingly but just don't accuse me of being a masochist. Boaz may have me beat there...
