In his Jan. 1st update, GRRM said, "I'm adding some chapters from the point of view of one of the characters featured in the first lot of Ice & Fire miniatures from Dark Sword, a character who has never had a POV in any of the earlier books."

I checked out the Dark Sword Mini's, and these are the ones listed:
  • Ser Jaime Lannister
  • Queen Cersei Lannister
  • Ser Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers
  • Sandor Clegane, the Hound
  • Melisandre of Asshai, red priestess of R'hllor
  • Jon Snow
  • four Sworn Brothers of the Night's Watch, including: raven keeper, archer, spearman, axeman/ swordsman.
I'm ruling out the four sworn brothers, and Jon, Jaime, and Cersei are obviously not it.
This leaves Loras, Sandor, and Melisandre as possible new POV's, I THINK, since previously he had said that Quentyn would be the final POV (I guess he changed his mind?)

I'm guessing/hoping that Loras will be the new POV he's referring to, what are your thoughts?

Sandor would be the best to me. I could care less about what Loras is thinking. Sandor is a deeply complicated and conflicted character with so many layers that I would love to get inside his head. I think Melisandre is out because she falls into the realm of "knows too much to be a POV" like Littlefinger and Varys.

A toss up between Sandor and Loras (although I would prefer Sandor). Either would confirm that Sandor is not dead and Loras is not burned - and likely on his way to Dany. But don't count out Mel if she either kills Stannis or leaves him.

I don't want to get into his head too explicitly, and that's why I like GRRM's thirdperson POV. We get to see how the character sees the world, rather than hear all of their thoughts. I personally like the Hound as a complicated, dark figure. But since this would be the 4th - 5th? book, it may be a good time to reveal more about Sandor.

One POV that would bore me terribly would be Loras. But maybe not. George can make the most boring of characters interesting. Maybe there are terrible secrets to him, and maybe we can see what the Tyrella are really all about.

Heh, not Bran. Even worse is that he surrounded Bran with characters who are, unbelievably, even more boring than he is. Poor Bran.

It could be MEslisandre, seems with Jon and Stannis both competing for being Azor, her dilemmas and thoughts could be fun to read, eben thou i dont like her one bit, which means makes her fun to read about :)

Unless they go to the Free Cities or into the North, then Loras and Sandor are both out because they're in the wrong location (ADWD focuses on characters in the North and the East, whilst AFFC focused on characters in the South). We also saw Sandor fairly late in the day in AFFC and the timeline means it's unlikely anything will happen that will warrant a POV from Sandor later on (although given that Asha and Arya are both in ADWD as well, that's not a complete impossibility).

Loras is a good possibility. There's stuff going on on Dragonstone that could warrant a POV (we could find out if Stannis' men managed to grab the obsidian he wanted to fight the Others) and I think GRRM has acknowledged that having elements of explicit lesbianism in the books whilst not really delving into the male gay characters is a bit unfair, so that's another reason to give Loras a POV or two (although not a good enough reason by itself, obviously; he has to fulfil a good story function).

However, Melisandre is the most likely candidate:

SPOILERS:
If Jon is going over the Wall to punish the oathbreakers who killed the Old Bear - and spoilers and the AFFC/ADWD cast list suggest some of the action takes place at Craster's Keep - and Stannis is going west to fight the ironborn, then Mel gives us a POV on the Wall itself.

Also, Mel doesn't know too much. She's been pretty much consistently wrong about everything so far, such as the true identity of the PWWP. She just likes to pretend she knows everything and puts on an air of pointless mystery. In many ways, she's like the Sphinx from Mystery Men ;)

Good point. I wouldn't mind a Melisandre POV. I'd definitely take her over Loras. I honestly don't think it will be Loras though. I think we're to be left in the dark about what happened to him until after ADWD. Also, do we really care what Loras was thinking during the events of AFFC? If ADWD is taking place at the same time as AFFC then what we're going to get is a bunch of scenes of Loras training Tommen, Loras guarding Margaery, and maybe some thoughts about how he thinks he should be Lord Commander over Jaime. It would have to be a very late POV I suppose for us to find out what happened on Dragonstone.

Anyway, Melisandre makes the most sense based on where the story in ADWD is supposed to be concentrated.

Uggh gross maybe I'm just biased against Melisandre because most of the chapters concerning Stannis (in my opinion) have been downright boring. I don't really think Loras and Sandor can be taken out because of location, just because (I think) GRRM has mixed so many things into this book (hence the reason it wasn't finished when it was first projected.
But if Loras is being sent to Dany, his will be repetitive, just a different take on Quentyn's. I'm rambling... I don't really know what my point was going to be.

I'm holding out for Loras on this one. I'd love a Tyrell insider - we might actually find out exactly how Joffrey died! Besides, I've always liked Loras and I'd rather Sandor remained mysterious. Mel is a possibility I guess, but we already have Jon at the Wall to tell us Stannis' side of the story.

I think a ColdHands POV would be nice. Or the POV of a wilding. Or of one the Others... Or Dead Ned. Something new.

No on Loras! But yes on his way cool grandma!

GRRM has said there will not be any POVs from an undead characters (when responding to a question on a possible Stoneheart POV)

I'm not the biggest Loras fan either but I think there is alot more than meets the eye.

Actually, I have to agree with you. George has shown us again and again with all the characters.

What I mean by undead would be like someone we thoght got knowched off but is still alive... I would not to hear from UnCat. But wildlings and Coldhands would be cool.

We don't really know who or what Coldhands is?

Who do you think is still alive that is supposed to be dead? Be specific.

Ygritte? Dalla? Harma? Drogo? Viserys? Eddard? Robb? Rhaegar? Lyanna? Aegon?

I still doubt a Loras POV set during the events of AFFC would be very interesting unless it came late enough that we just get his attack on Dragonstone. But why not just put that POV in AFFC since he's in King's Landing? Doesn't make sense.

GRRM has said that at the end of ADWD, the timelines will meet and he will actually advance the timelines by giving us Arya and Asha chapters (and possibly others). This is where a Loras chapter from Dragonstone (and on his way to Dany) would fit nicely.

I mean people wo have died off screen. Loras, Stannis (although we know he's alive, so I'm talking about him), the Hound.... those types.

I'm going to find it extremely hard to resist skipping to Arya's chapter and reading it first to find out what happened to her. As of right now, there's no way I'm going to be able to wait through hundreds of pages before finding out her fate.
