Well, I think it was a James Bond flick. Here's what I remember:

I think it was intro to a film. A spy (I think it was a Bond), is infiltrating a jungle terrorist hideout to free a beautiful blonde hostage. He kicks ass and frees the girl from her bonds. She then proceeds to shoot him in the chest. With a paintball gun. And then Bond's superiors come into the hut and say how they're disappointed that he fell for that, and reminded him to be wary in the future of Stockholm syndrome. So it was all a training exercise.

Does any of that ring a bell with anyone? It was probably at least as old as the mid-80's.

Thanks! :)

It was Never Say Never Again,
A sort of rebel production to the main franchise with Sean Connery returning to fill the role of Bond

It was a remake of Thunderball, although the villain stole a cruise missile rather than a nuclear bomb from a RAF v-bomber.

Despite some defects, I think this one had a truly cold and calculating villain, and some rather nice heroines and villainesses; Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera.

Are you not thinking of a scene in Stromberg's underwater base in "The Spy Who Loved Me"?

I thought the "prisoner" stabbed Bond with a fake knife with a retractable blade. I seem to recall Bond grunting, as though he really had been stabbed, then letting out a sigh as he realizes he's botched the exercise.

And speaking of exercise, M tells Bond to cut down on all the alcohol, red meat and white bread. Bond is being sent to a fat farm! So as Bond is stepping out of M's office on his new "assignment," he leans over and whispers conspiratorially to Moneypenny, "I'm to eliminate all free radicals." Moneypenny looks worried and tells Bond to be careful.

Screenplay by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, including some familiar gags for fans of Porridge and The Likely Lads - well, the yanks hadn't heard them yet ;)
