I started reading this series a LONG time ago and for some reason it has been popping up in my head quite a bit of late. This is what I remember:
Humans were a 2nd class race.
The Pilots were a horned race that navigated Chaos until they "burned out"
By transferring their chaos navigating ability into a human, when it was transfered back it was rejuvenated.
The races used to meet on a planet called Sorrow(?) to commemorate the battle scenes frozen under the ice.
